Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to
Well, this is the actual question isn’t it? (At least as far as the ‘dinosaur thinking’ of Mediaworks goes.)
The “dinosaur thinking” thing is silly. Viewers are their product. They sell viewers to advertisers – that is their revenue model.
Yep, I totally get that. The problem to my mind is that we have put ourselves in a place where only $ and hence only ratings count.
I guess CL is actually being lamented as a (the?) last bastion of high-profile public service television in a country that has largely given up on such an endeavour.

Serious question: who here regularly watches Campbell Live?
Well, this is the actual question isn’t it? (At least as far as the 'dinosaur thinking' of Mediaworks goes.)
I have to say that I don’t. My news diet these days is Morning Report, then a flick through the Herald and Stuff websites, then the Guardian and the New York Times… Broadcast TV doesn’t really feature.

I've not long returned from the US, where there are of course very many channels of crap constantly available, but one source of light (as opposed to heat) can be found in the form of PBS - public-good television, based (as I understand it) on a subscriber and sponsorship model. When I finally got my Freeview working (Russell you were right - the aerial was bung!) I was again depressed to revisit the spots where TVNZ6&7 used to be, now occupied by those ridiculous +1 channels. Equally depressing is the fact that although we can find Freeview space for three shopping channels, three Chinese-language channels, and one Indian-language channel, we're not able to support anything that looks like national public service broadcasting, Add to this the (surely?) last-gasp patch protectionism by Mediaworks, TVNZ, Sky et. al. re: 'global mode' streaming services, and it seems to me that the future of the Campbell Lives of this world may indeed be in some kind of streaming service... or maybe on Maori Television?

I find it hard to feel sorry for people like the Tamakis. They may do some good to some people, but their eye seems firmly fixed on the bottom line.

Hard News: How about that cricket, eh?, in reply to
If resetting and auto-tuning didn’t work, it may be that your aerial is bung.
Well, maybe... It picks up the shopping channels just fine, though.

A fairy tale script that would look like a cliché if you wrote it down.
The final will be no trouble now, eh?
(Sadly I was reduced to following it on a ball-by-ball text feed on the internet. I've recently got back from a year in the US, and last night I finally had motivation to set up the TV... only to find Prime (along with Maori TV, RNZ...) sadly absent from my Freeview. After a frantic series of factory resets and autotuning attempts I gave up and sat with my laptop clicking Reload Current Page. Note to self: be better prepared for next moment of national sporting pride. Anyone got any suggestions about the telly?)

...a dedicated SH16 busway seems likely in the longer term.
That sentence fills me with rage and despair. Now would seem the perfect time to me, given how much work is going into raising the causeway. It's long overdue already.

Hard News: Incomplete, inaccurate and misleading, in reply to
Aaaand … here’s the Collins SFO report.
Summary: “Whaleoil was just bullshitting”?

Can someone tell me why this is not our Watergate moment?

I haven’t looked, but I’m guessing our early 60s house on a section in ‘Tattoo North’ will be $1M+ Insane indeed.
This can’t go on, surely.
For quite a while, yes. See: Manhattan
