Presumably someone form the Granny reads Public Address, because Drinnan's online piece now refers to "Hard News" rather than "Hard Copy".

Re. the Media7 discussions tonight. I would love to see Anthony Flannery, the Australian head of our State broadcaster's newsroom, answering questions as to why there are so few Maori and older people in his newsrooms.
Jonno: WTF is the enitrely gratuitous and irrelevant 'Australian' reference about? Its about an Australian broadcasting executive bringing a model based on the commercial Australian environment to a quasi-state broadcaster in New Zealand. In my eyes, he has deliberately reduced the average age of the reporting staff, through sideways "promotions" and redundancies. In regard to the monocultural nature of the newsroom, the kindest thing I could suggest is that he is largely unaware of the bicultural nature of Aotearoa/New Zealand. This might explain his inability to pronounce Te Karere correctly. An unkind person might suggest that given the extensive and detailed focus-group research they do (down the audiences changing viewing habits of individual stories and reporters), the One News executives have decided that their target demographic (rich folk 25-54) prefer pretty young Pakeha faces, and have matched their recruitment policy accordingly.

Re. the Media7 discussions tonight. I would love to see Anthony Flannery, the Australian head of our State broadcaster's newsroom, answering questions as to why there are so few Maori and older people in his newsrooms. I understand there is only one Maori reporter in the entire company who works on an English-language daily programme, none on their flagship current affairs programmes (Sunday, Close-Up, 20/20). The average age is in the early 30s, and this was prior to the latest round of redundancies where experienced older journalists like Owen Poland and Brent Fraser were given the boot. Wouldn't it be nice to see a little diversity on One News, a bit more of a reflection of the wider society they reportedly serve?

And Agenda may be back on our screens after all.
... get rid of Garner and replace him with Linda Clark, and they might have something going there. And Sean can forget it as well.
In reality, I'd be surprised if 3 go ahead with this. The NZOA funding doesn't cover the entire show, and I can't see Mediaworks coughing up more money for a low-rating show when they are already deep in the poo and thinking about cutting existing programmes.

I am always amused by the way the largely white, largely middle class media follows the largely whitr, middle class National party on an expedition to "South Auckland" once every three years, then on the basis of three photo ops offers breathless opinions on the death of the Labour vote. Its deeply condescending and reflects the race and class divide that defines the 1960's Auckland of the NZ Herald from the reality of most of the majority of Aucklanders
On a related note, how can TVNZ's news and current affairs claim to have any breadth of perspective when there is not one Maori reporter on One News (Tini Molyneaux having been sent to the ghetto of Waka Huia for the foreseeable future - heaven forbid they should want a [any] Maori perspective during an election campaign)?
Russell, perhaps you could ask Anthony Flannery to front on TVNZ7 and name any, ANY, Maori reporters or producers on Close Up or Sunday. Just one. ' Cos he wont be able to.

While parts of the racing industry might have some questions to answer, I still think the real story lies in the fishing industry, and their ability to bully, threaten and bribe with little or no comeback.

I know there are those out there who feel the Gallery has a duty to tell the public all it knows. But on the flipside we also have ethical responsibilities not to be a conduit for unsubstantiated gossip.
Felix, the impression I have from the sidelines is that there is an incredibly strong trend towards being first to report Parliament stuff. Its a trend that extends out into general news obviously, but the advent of new streams of communication have forced some organisations into a breathless trumpeting that they were FIRST! Analysis and depth tend to be brushed aside (much like the way Winston has started brushing cameras out of the way on the way into the House).
Actually, "brushed aside" may be a little harsh - I still appreciate all the solid work that goes in from people like yourself, Audrey, Tracey, Brent Edwards. Trying to pin Winston down is, well, impossible.

And how come Hayden Jones now seems to be television's designated "tits" reporter after his scathing expose of the misunderstood Lisa Lewis the other night. The humanity.
That would have been Paul Hobbs you saw last Thursday.

And my goodness, they'd have to be careful in the hurdles
