Can someone in the media ALERT THE PUBLIC to the latest attempt by Colonial Capital Corporation Ltd a.k.a. David Tweed to convince kiwi investors to part with their shares for MUCH less than market value.
I have TODAY recieved a set of documents from CCC Ltd that, amongst the gobbledy gook, says it will buy my shares in Rio Tinto for $16,000 - at the same time admitting the current market value of the shares is $26,000! All I need to do is sign the form and send it back and the cash will be in my account in 7 days.
Tweed has amassed a multi-million dollar fortune through similar offers both here and in Australia. It is important to recognise that what he is doing is not illegal and NOT FRAUD. He simply finds out via the share register who owns the shares he's going after and sends out an official looking document asking people to sign and sell. Within the document he has acknowledged the market price of your shares and suggested you get independent advice before offering to sell.
If you know of novice, naive or elderly investors who may have recieved this offer from CCC Ltd it would be nice if you alerted them to the low offer he is making. By selling the shares on the open market (most banks can sell your shares via an online account) you will get a much better rate. Even phoning a share broker in the Yellow Pages will still be less expensive than selling to CCC Ltd.
Whilst people who have sold their shares to CCC Ltd in the past for significantly less than the market value may later feel 'cheated' or 'ripped off' or claim they were 'confused' by the document, the Courts have ruled that CCC Ltd have not broken any laws.
So whilst most people would presume one would READ ANY PURCHASE OFFER CAREFULLY clearly there are many who don't, given the number who have in fact sold their shares to CCC Ltd for significantly less than market value.

heh heh. I could have added to my earlier anecdote that something I found fascinating about the Chinese I interacted with was their fierce patriotism. They may have 'escaped' China and have horrifying stories of life under communist rule, but gawd help you if you try to diss China. Weird was the pride they had in the spirit of that chap who stopped the tank in Tiannenmen Square with his shopping bags, whilst at the same time openly derissive of the thought that he could change anything.
A little soft, pragmatic nationalism in the midst of a global banking mess would also go down well, but that's not what they've gone for.
I am available for any TV commercials they may wish to make. My shares in four Aussie banks (who own 'our' four) have all dropped 20-30% in the last two months! I coincidently met a chap from high up one of those four at the weekend. He said it was going to be very bumpy in the next few months. Turns out the markets run on 'sentiment' and until everyone calms down a simple fart could potentially wipe out a whole industry sector. For no reason other than the fear that smell could be permanent (as if). Once Mum & Dad investors have fled the market guess who's buying up the shares at bargain prices? The rich will get richer ...

I think I've fried my daughter's tiny brain (she's only 6) with all my stories that begin with "Did you know that I used to be a ... [insert job here]" whenever she mentions something vaguely relevant to a position I once held (even briefly).
I've had about 20 jobs in 20 years -- not sure what message I'm giving her ... -

Most of the ones I know just shrug when asked about 'China'. And their parents just chuckle. They'll tell you horrific stories of life in China/Hong Kong and why they left 50-40 years ago, but then laugh when you suggest 'something should be done to make China more democratic'. The current regime is just one of many that have ruled China for 8,000 years. The Chinese believe patience is a virtue.

Let's praise Bill for doing what all journalists should do before publishing: factchecking. Turns out what Bill's hairdresser's mother's neighbour's nephew in Hamilton heard from a friend (a really good friend, who wouldn't make this up) about Russell simply wasn't true afterall.

To be clear (in reply to Craig): I agree in general terms with what Tom said above. I believe the Chinese should be out of Tibet - although I have no freaking idea how that can be achieved since China is a monolith. Scratch that, China is The Borg. They will subsume everything in their path, they will have anything they want. Whilst America has spent the last umpteen years shouting "U-S-A! U-S-A! We're Number One!" The Chinese have quietly continued on, doing whatever they f#ck they like. They result is that every nation on earth wants a free trade agreement with them. We think we're getting access to their billion consumers, but the reverse is true.
Prediction: 10 years from now Fonterra will be 'exporting' it's 'knowledge' in milk production to China. The government of the day will laud this as a 'success' and there will be much back-slapping over the revenue generated. Fonterra will show (for a price) the Chinese where they should build their dairy farms (areas recreating NZ conditions re climate, soil, grass production etc) and set up the modern dairy factories for them. And then in 20 years NZ farmers will be bleating because commodity prices have fallen through the floor, due to Chinese output. And guess who Nestle will be dealing with by that time?

Ethnic Tibetans certainly have a grievance. But so, arguably, do native Fijians, and we'd hardly be comfortable with them wreaking ethnically-targeted havoc on Indian businesses in their towns. (Or would the better comparison be with the Israeli-occupied territories? I don't know.)
Er, Israel would be the better comparison surely? The Palestinians had the Israeli's forced upon them, just as the Tibetans have had the Chinese forced upon them. I'm not aware of the Fijians having Indians forced upon them. (Actually, I'm ignorant of how the Indians came to be in Fiji. I presume it was as cheap labour?) <standsbyforschooling>
But your Tibet-Was-No-Paradise comments are also apt. I forget who/where (BFM?)(PAS?) but someone has previously pointed out (during his last visit to NZ) that the Dalai Lama has some very conservative views on homosexuality that don't sit well with the image we have of him ...
