Stewart, but it would still be better not to eat them and for them not to exist. Their existence is for our pleasure and will inevitably involve their pain. Besides, animal husbandry is bad for the environment.

I am not a moral crusader for the vege lobby: I am not moral enough or veggie enough. I just think that if you want pigs to be happy you should think about not eating them; which is not a threadjack, but a logical progression in the discussion.

Cheap pork products at retail are quite likely to contain cheap, imported factory meat

    Or Cat.

Before we all get too soppy about how happy the pigs are on free range farms and how good they taste, remember that they do have to be killed to get from one place to the other: from the state of happiness to the state of tastyness. Might I suggest another idea, that we do not eat them at all?

It's quite refreshing when companies *don't* wrap themselves in the flag.

Or try to define our national identity with kiwiana images and sporting heroes.

  • OnPoint: How it would work,

For all I know there could be a huge groundswell of support for Melissa Lee, or a secret war going on with Ravi Musuku's gang. There are thousands of Aucklanders arguing every day, whose voices people like me never hear. Who's going to tell us? Not the press gallery, certainly.

We lefties always think when we expose a bigot that we have won the argument. We fail to notice that opinions like Ms Lee's are heard everyday on talkback radio and are held by many ordinary people.

Breaking news: a lot of people think that guy who killed the tagger was justified. Prediction: the result of the s59 referendum will not be a happy one.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

The Rankin debacle is simply an arrogant icing on National's shark-jumping cake.

And someone left the cake out in the rain.. my point being, this is the most psychedelic mixed metaphor I have seen in a long time.

Going forward, I think we should declare a moratorium on the use of the shark-jumping metaphor. It was never really that clever or funny, and it serves to confuse. Instead, we should say 'going forward' constantly. It seems to work for the new men who are taking over the running of this country.

The 6, no, 3 Degrees of Muriel Newman. Something that Paul L could dig dirt on.

You called? Yes, she has her fingers in every pie; but then they are all in it together: Rankin, Sax, the Grants, a whole bunch of former sportsmen; what they have in common is lots of money and lots of prejudices. They cannot abide the professional conduct of social services and education, so they use their money and influence to undermine it.

For that reason I am less relaxed than Russell about the appointment of Bruce Pilbrow. For a start, he has no expertise: his background is in marketing, not any social profession. But then neither do his employers, the Grants. They have strong opinions about how children should behave but no professional knowledge; their opinions are at variance with the knowledge of professionals. Yet, they have turned their opinions into a nice little earner: you might note that everything provided by Parents Inc comes at a price.

  • Cracker: Gossip, Music and Laughs,

If anyone is looking for a job, here is the advertisement; since it involves representing the masthead at public events (getting pissed at parties), it may well be the job for you, Mr Christie:

The ideal candidate will be an experienced writer with a flair for words and a talent for gathering must-read news about New Zealand’s best-known faces. The person must have superb contacts across the country, in spheres as diverse as entertainment, sport, business and the food scene. The successful columnist will be connected to all levels of New Zealand society and celebrity, and be abreast of the latest news and trends.

A background in journalism – either newspaper or magazines – would be well-regarded; otherwise the columnist will need to demonstrate an ability to deliver crisp, accurate and compelling copy, and work to deadlines. Willingness to work as part of a close-knit team and represent the masthead at public events – day or night - are other essential aspects to the role.

The successful candidate, who will be engaged as a contractor, will need flexibility around their working hours, and remuneration will reflect their experience.

To apply, send your CV and a covering letter (by Wednesday, May 27) to:
