  • Capture: Spring is Like a Perhaps Hand,

I used to get the double vision type effect that these work on all the time when I was a teenager - like hours a day. Drove me nuts.

At some stage in my 20s I managed to train my eyes not to do it, now when I want it to look at these, can I make it happen? Can't win.

I had a boyfriend who liked to stand and jump into his jeans with both feet at once. His success rate was about 50%, pretty good really.

Wouldn't the other 50% lead to him falling onto his forehead?

Moreover, why this solution - an extreme position, entirely inconsistent with our history and one that we know from Australia does not work and causes immeasurable harm.

It's a political judgement, obviously. And given that they clearly aren't coming to NZ, the fact that it doesn't work and does harm to the immigrants becomes somewhat irrelevant in the NZ context. Sad though.

It would have been good to have a short description for a few days outlining the classification system as it would make the events more enjoyable. Knowing what the disability is and therefore what the spectator can expect in performance would be useful.

I'd agree with that. I've caught the highlights a few times and they breeze through the races real quick and just give the classification - be nice to be informed what the classifications mean at the time.

  • Up Front: Choice, Bro,

Not all of whom are Labour, with or without air quotes, by any stretch of the imagination.

Exactly. I normally wouldn't say nice things about almost any of the youth wings, but all of them seem to have taken leadership of their seniors in this issue, and young nats in particular timed their work pretty well.

  • Up Front: Choice, Bro,

Well, sure – but as Emma said the idea Suo’s been pushing that marriage equality will cost Labour some of its safest seats? Well, as I’ve said ad nauseum, remember when Fran Wilde handed National the ’87 general election? You don’t because it didn’t happen.

Yeah, that's clearly not true. Maybe Sio believes that his seat is in danger, in which case some Labour strategists need to sit down with him and point out the realities. O'Connor is certainly, in part, protecting his job. If I thought he was just doing that I'd be pissed, but clearly he's voting with his (misguided) conscience as well.

But that doesn't mean that voting progressively on these sorts of social issues doesn't have a cost on the other half of the ballot paper (and I think a positive). Somewhere in Labour HQ there's a bunch of work being done on that.

  • Up Front: Choice, Bro,

Sofie, if Labour didn’t de-select him and he stood again in Mangere, you think that electorate would vote against Labour, on this single issue? Here are the results from last time so you can calculate the swing.

I don't know whether it's true, but I think Labour feels that when that South Auckland Labour vote doesn't turn out, they get screwed. They felt this 4 years ago from memory.

Yes electorate votes don't matter, but Labour certainly feels that they do. But there's a party vote cost there as well. As well as a party vote benefit?

I'd much rather they all voted regardless of the politics on this issue. I hate to see human rights tossed out to polling.

  • Legal Beagle: Alcohol Game Theory,

Possibly as you picked Graeme - the split option drops out early, and then the final vote keeps it at 18.

  • Legal Beagle: Alcohol Game Theory,

Couldn't this also be done with three votes. Those in favour of 18 Yes, other No. Those in favour of split Yes, other No. Those in favour of 20 Yes, other No. I guess they'd also need to clearly stipulate that an MP could only vote Yes in one of the 3 options.

Isn't that effectively what they're doing? If you only get to vote yes for one option you're just picking one out of three.
