  • Hard News: The Casino,

scan to txt could work but scanning a 500 page book wouldn't be easier unless they've got automated scanning sorted.

This is long solved, including the OCR. Manually, about a day. Automated, 2-3 hours, tops.

And in that time you could have been working and earned more than enough to buy the book so what is the point? It seems to me that there are some in creative and publishing circles that spend far too much time bemoaning the fact that it is technically possible that someone could get access to their work without paying them for it. The fact is that the same technology enables them to create vast numbers of copies of their work that they do get payed for.
لا يمكنك أن يكون لديك كعكة وأكله
Which, roughly translated from the Arabic means.
You can not have your cake and eat it.

(I just wanted to see if that worked, cool ;-) )

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

I was wondering what you guys were on about because I read this in T'erald yesterday.

Apple also introduced a new Mac Pro desktop PC aimed at business users. The new Mac Pro starts at $2,499, $300 less than the previous Mac Pro.

In addition, the company unveiled two new Mac Mini desktops, measuring 6.5 inches by 6.5 inches by 2 inches, with the entry-level price unchanged at $599.

I copied it to a note as I have clients looking at upgrading stuff. When I looked at T'erald today I found,

The new Mac Pro, with Intel's "Nehalem" Xeon processor, starts at $5599 in New Zealand.

Yesterdays piece was cut and pasted from a Reuters article then changed and buried (Tech articles in the Herald, usually, hover around in the Tech headlines for days) What is the point I am making here?
oh yeah, T'erald is lazy and tells fibs.

  • Field Theory: Here's what we know,

Six Policemen killed and seven cricketers injured?
are we really sure who the target was?
    Who has claimed responsibility?
This has nothing to do with cricket, unless Sri Lanka beating Pakistan is a reason and I find that really hard to believe.

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

I recall the script being very formulaic, and unfunny, and all the 'humour' was channelled through a series of grotesque interludes with 2 dimensional characters

Yeah, well actually Mark, I still see Nightline that way, come to think of it, all "News" programmes grab me like that.

I went to school with a guy of the same name. I'm assuming it's him.

You went to school? Who'd have guessed. ;-)

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

    Whatever happened to Belinda Todd?

I saw her on Ponsonby road about 15 years ago, driving a BMW if I remember correctly. I was, momentarily, star struck. She had balls, metaphorically of course.
Oh Belinda, if only things had been diferent.
