  • Island Life: A Special Public Address Message,

Hadyn - Conor's message touches briefly on this:

Once the costs for home schooling Leo have been taken out, Russell will be using the remaining funds to help better serve kids like Leo who are "in" schools right now.

Russell has some quite exciting ideas about building on this as well, which I daresay he'll have plenty to say about at some stage.

wouldn't mind if there's another way for me to show my (financial) support.

Quite a few people have been asking about this. Pead PR will gladly accomodate that - if you email Conor Roberts at Conor@peadpr.co.nz , he'll fill you in.

  • Hard News: Bad men,

    Simon G wrote:

I think we should stick all the "experts" in the one room, tell them they can never leave until they ALL agree, and make it into a Reality TV show. Rated R18. That will tell us all we need to know how verdicts happen. It's not pretty.

Be careful what you wish for. You might get Jeffrey Archer...

    from TV.Com:

Starting this Sunday (11th Feb) on BBC2 is a show called The Verdict ....
Twelve well-known people- disgraced peer and author Jeffrey Archer, actress Honor Blackman, former footballer Stan Collymore, actress Jennifer Ellison, Anne Summers founder Jacqueline Gold, musician Alex James, entrepreneur Dominic McVey, So Solid Crew's Megaman, actress Patsy Palmer, campaigner Sara Payne, politician Michael Portillo and broadcaster Ingrid Tarrant- must sit as a jury on a fictional case which is presided over, prosecuted and defended by legal professionals.

International footballer Damien Scott and his friend James Greer are both accused of a brutal rape. Over the four days of the trial, evidence from eyewitnesses and the victim will be presented to the court. Whilst the defendants, victim and eyewitnesses are all actors, the trial is unscripted and the barristers will be free to prosecute and defend as they would in a real court of law.

When all the evidence has been presented, the jury must retire to consider their verdict. Cameras will follow them into the jury room and capture the deliberations, arguments, coercions and the general process in which this jury will reach their verdict.

The Controller of BBC2 has stated that "this is a hugely ambitious project which brings the law to life in a completely new way. It will be fascinating to follow the twists and turns of the case, see the dynamics and power struggles within the jury, learn about the jury system with its inherent flaws and strengths."

  • Island Life: Internet the way you want it,

Finally I think there IS already just the network that Rod's talking about, govt funded even ..... at least something to build a greater infrastructure on - the new University net is I understand being built on existing dark fibre and would probably make a great start for just this sort of expansion - in fact I get the impression that its powers-that-be may already have such plans ....

There's a wrinkle there with TelstraClear ownership, if I understand it correctly. Juha, can you throw some light on that?

I'd also throw this in: would the govt-owned rail network be of some help to Rod's plan?

  • Auckland Earthquake - Some Mistake Surely?,

Some of us did notice, and some of us spent a few minutes explaining to our frightened 7 year old what she had just experienced for the first time.

We told her what it was like for Mum and Dad growing up in the lower North Island where they have them all the time, and explained why you would get under a table if it really started rocking. We didn't tell her that when the big one hits Wellington, people might die. She would probably have spent the night fretting about her cousins.

Clearly, it varied across the city. We didn't notice the first one at all, but the second one was a decent thump that lasted a few seconds and gave the house a fair old shaking. The TV picture momentarily ghosted too, which was a nice echo of the museum's volcanic eruption simulator.

I've been in bigger and more sustained ones, but I've also had a lot that were slighter than this. The point is, what's commonplace in one place is unremarkable, but what's scarcely happened in living memory in another is more noteworthy.

I see Stuff is adopting the same tones as Sean Plunket talking about Aucklanders "running into the streets". Sheesh. We'll still send choppers and blankets when you need them.

  • Auckland Earthquake - Some Mistake Surely?,

There's an interesting discussion going on at TradeMe about tonight's earthquakes.

You leave Wellington and the damn things follow you north. Feel free to report in with your observations.
