    On the other hand most of us spent a 10-20 years in the state system and have a very inside view on how it used to be, faults and all

    One of the real ongoing troubles with Education is it tends to be run by people who liked school/or did very well at it, passed exams went to Uni, did honour degrees, phds and now have the levers firmly in their hands
    They quite frankly don't understand the rest of us and it is only recently that they have tried too
    Certainly been big improvements since I went to school when if you didn't fit you left at 15 and got a job

    I am not a big fan of testing ( I loved test/exams) as it really fails to give you a big picture but something is needed and boy do parents love to have something to rate their kids with

    That said I am less than happy with the present rush under urgency, I didn't like Labour making quite important constitutional changes without cross party support and I don't like this but hey we voted for them

    Have to agree on your main point David
    I have been invited to COGs chairpersons conference, this is a two day affair and will cost a bomb for me to attend..flights, meals accomodation etc
    Unfortunatly we have already had our allocation meetings ($800,0000 requests with only $300,000 to give)

    So what a waste of money, some pressure has been applied to make me or someone attend but if this is not a pure expression of waste I just cannot imagine a better one

    And meantime the Treasury experts tellus to save for our old age and wonder why people would rather spend and hope

    As an example a reputable bank has offered to look after my savings for.......$25,000 per year and meantime I take all the risk

    Not sure how these particular experts made their money but I didn't do it by ripping off old ladies or making gifts to the wealthy

    I think it will be interesting to see how the new Speaker manages thing, will he fall back to that much detested quiz master manner of old or what
    I must admit being very dissapointed on our last Speaker but who would want the job, it is hardly surprising that they mostly need to be dragged screaming to the chair

    And yes I am more that aware that the worlds cock ups are being propped up by governments I just not aware of much being done here except the guaranteed the deposits of some banks (at some cost to them)
    All the rest are very old news, the BNZ was first propped up first 100 years ago?

    Danyl, so which large chunks of the private sector in New Zealand are being saved by the "public service"?

    And Russell the "honeymmon" is called that for a reason...not much news actually but it would be nice if some with a left leaning just got used to the fact that national won...get your head around that and then start pointing out their mistakes
