Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to
Top tax bracket by a long way but happy to do my bit.
Same , but the electorate did not vote for the parties promising tax hikes. But what would they know right?
They are just the "kiwi battlers " doing it tough through some lean economic times. Who could blame them for thinking that there are still quite a few who are not pulling their weight? Or at least , not working quite so hard.NZers do work hard ; that's a fact.
If they worked out that they were spending three months of the year working to fill the government coffers , can you blame them for not wanting to increase it to four months?Whatever . . . . that's the way that they voted.

I know NZ is a small country but the ‘mateyness’ of our media is tiresome.
Nobody has to watch or listen to it. My alarm clock radio has an off switch, which is getting a lot more use lately. In fact turning it off after the 5 a.m. news works pretty well.

Democracy isn’t about imposing ideas, it’s about listening to and reflecting the will of the people. To find the answer as to why the left lost, much can be learned from how the right won.
Wow! Somebody said it.
A lot of talk here about tactics ; very little about policy.Did anyone notice that National was NOT promising tax cuts?
O.K. I don't belong here , obviously, so anything I might say is coming from the wrong side of the fence to be taken seriously, but Labour and the Greens were both promising big tax hikes.
Non-negotiable policy? It sure looked like it.
Oh well, only turkeys vote for Xmas. -

Matthew's point was that well-being and and social progress (?) are the objectives, and the tax take ought to be no more than is necessary to achieve those objectives.
