  • Hard News: When it's Not Okay,

I think the saddest thing about Kristin and all the other women who are similarly 'trapped', is that they simply cannot walk away.

To me, their self-esteem and dignity should drive them out of the relationship, but sadly, even some don't know any better than to stay.

  • Hard News: Put on the full armour of God,

I agree Obama is in danger of losing control of the story. Although I can certainly understand his reluctance, the time is fast approaching when he needs to front-foot this issue and stop the continual drip of documents and photos. Otherwise he risks derailing his whole agenda

But I am monitoring the US media very intently just now, to see how well this guy can turn his nation around. It is fascinating.

But what is more interesting is my reaction to the American public. After electing Bush twice, I didn't think too highly of them but after this latest election and watching the media recently, I have warmed to them.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Prime Minister John Key said yesterday he was unhappy Mr Allen's name was in the public domain before he was officially appointed, "and I have made my unhappiness known".

He did not believe it was a leak from the Cabinet or from the ministry. "I do have a sense of where it came from and I am grumpy about it."

That wouldn't be Mr Farrar would it?

Fran O'sullivan, who seems to have close contacts with the powers-that-be, pronounced this on Saturday.

Regarding Rankin, this decision is unbelievable, shocking even. What's more worrying is the naivety of Bennett, to be 'astounded' at the reaction and putting it down to 'politics'.

As days go by, this lot is showing all the signs of being incompetent just like the 90-99 crowd.

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

I agree with Tom, it is about time Labour stopped reacting to Kiwiblog and set its own agenda for the by-election. The worst that can happen now is for these nutters derail the campaign before it has even started.

  • Hard News: Problems,

It has been fascinating watching the US MSM's coverage of the last 60 days. Fox, as you would expect, has given Obama no latitude, CNN a bit more lenient.

But they all concentrate on the economy.Even Washington Post and NYT commentary is now starting to criticize, esp. Geitner and Summers of the Administration. The bank bailout plan has, and still looking like, coming up short with suggestions that these two are taking too much heed of their old banking friends.

At least they have a plan which is more than can be said for our lot.

  • Hard News: Siren song,

I have had very little trouble with Vista HP. SP1 installed properly, without any bluescreens, and generally runs speedily with few hassles. Installing third party software requires patience and grog, however.

But I cannot get used to the new Stuff. After registering, it will not remember me even using a different tab within Firefox on the same day. I emailed Don but no reply - anyone else help?

  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

Wonderful RB, I often wondered what made you tick; reading rugby newsgroups during the 90's told me you were a passionate Auck, but I couldn't see why? I also remember you saying before that when you arrived back in Auckland off the plane, you arrived home even though you hail from Canterbury?

My only other comment is that our business, especially primary industry, community is still not up to the mark even after some relatively good years.

  • Hard News: The Trophy Hunter,

Here's where I'm seriously pissed off by Ryall -- allowed another public health manager of dubious judgement or competence to play the richly undeserved role of martyr.

Can't agree Craig. I think the case for Thomson's non-responsibility is strong - all I can think that Ryall wants to insert one of his fellow NP members onto that Board to get rid of a LP man. I would have thought now Ryall has gone this far, he has to sack Thomson and state publicly the reasons for doing so. Otherwise, he will give the impression of a weak, loose cannon.

I also hear that Ryall is going around asking all of the DHBs 'How many managers have you got?', so naturally they are classifying $110k nursing manager as a nurse. Really, hasn't he got anything better to do?

  • Hard News: Don't bother voting,

Being rural-based and and a small business owner, give me good reasons why I or any other farmer should vote National. Is it doing away with the Fast-Forward fund and the R&D credits, gutting Kiwisaver, or the politicisation of the Super Fund..?

Surely, these voters can see through this vote-grabbing exercise? Otherwise I despair for the future.

  • Hard News: There's a lot of it about,

...Mallard with Clark’s approval made comments about Brash’s private life.

which turned out to be no rumour.

In my remote part of the world any Nat member happily tells you the latest tittle-tattle/nasty rumour about Clark & co. They might not start them but they certainly don't stop them.
