Also, pick your own strawberries in season out Ranui way (end of the north/western motorway, left then right at the roundabout, straight down, can't miss it).

FFS, Bernard, you've changed your mind. People do that. No need to carry on ...

Oh come on now Craig, an epiphany of such importance should be allowed to swing from the chandeliers or wallow in the pits of despair. Give the lad a break dude. ;-)

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

I was merely pondering whether the removal of GST from healthy foods in Australia had made any difference.

Can't speak for them, but I can promise you, it will make a difference for me. Just as Damian mentioned the free range eggs are way down in price now because demand increased. I know that is not the point but it is a point about having a good choice.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

May I suggest that anyone in Auckland who objects to paying GST on their fruit and veg

I'm going out on a limb here and saying I don't think people object,(wade in of course those who disagree) I just think a zero rated tax on fruit and veg is a start to addressing the price hike that food will incur and for those on a lower income, I think it will help to budget for better food over rubbish and if you are "poor'' $4 saving odd is a nice meal if need be. The markets are always a good way to shop if one is local and wants to support the community. Some people don't like the markets for other reasons though. :)

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

Your faith in the free resources is touching, but very, very naive.

Yeah fine, I don't claim ever to be an expert but I actually used all those free services and they do work for those of us that want to budget correctly.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But it's not true. Plenty of evidence of small operators under-cutting the supermarkets in a huge way on fruit and vege, but do the supermarkets drop their prices? Do they hell.

Well where I live, I shop at all the fruit and veg shops around the supermarket. They know me by name and the service is brilliant, so if the supermarket doesn't want my business, so be it.There is no shortage of small shops around big business to enjoy the custom. I'd rather go to the farmers markets personally. I actually don't put the supermarkets first.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

I like what Bart said, and andin has a point too.Any shift can, and will take a time to get right, which is probably why Mr Goff suggested a trial to weigh up the good and bad. It seems no problem to throw the cost of law and order around like the holes in my cheese to us little people.Shit we are spending millions extra on a whim and a fancy of big thugs taking over our city, without any choice. So, choice be dammed, and put out a manual,(throw in an implementation period if that will float your boat) explain the changes with an info line if their is confusion.
The IRD have been very helpful to me when I pick up the phone and query anything with regard to taxes. They seem all about the education to me. They have all sorts of booklets too. Can't they make another one?. If enforcement is the problem, we have a judicial system that doesn't require money for representation. We have CAB. Google it.
If it makes certain places stock or not stock because of gst, then so be it, but I think the very fact it is cheaper is good advertising for any small shop, and supermarkets would have to trade at the same level as the smaller ones or they would loose business. If we turn back to smaller shops instead of Australian conglomerates, I have no problem, especially if the growers benefit in NZ.
Clean Green NZ, could be healthier as well.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

GST is already the most-disputed part of our tax system and it's incredibly simple.

How? Who disputes it? We know what an exemption is. Yes it's simple. A fresh fruit and veg is a pretty simple exemption as well.
There was no outcry when big bad tobacco was taxed again.Fair? We understand bad real easy, We understand fuel tax, we got roads. It's as simple as tax or no tax eh? What does the horticulture industry think?. If they like it, I'll understand, and happily buy knowing I'm helping the economy and my stomach. The poor people will have a chance to have a saving beside those who would always get the tax cuts

Who pays for appeals to the Taxation Review Authority? To the Courts? For the accounting and/or legal advice on classification of goods? The IRD?

Authority? As per usual I imagine. The rest of your waffle is just that. It's called best business practice Matthew Poole, if you're interested in one. Doh!
Geez guys, way to harsh my buzz.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

. I think rents are exempt. Is that true?

Residential yes, but if one rents a space to live and run a business from, gst is charged on the rental but then tax can be claimed back for a portion of the rent for the area that one lives in, just as tax can be claimed on a residential rental as a work office etc.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

David Farrar notes this from Michael Cullen, Hansard 2004:

Well of course he would. but I'm looking forward and as a person who mainly eats fruit and veg, I will enjoy it not acquiring gst. If my avocados are $2.50 in off season, I will still be able to enjoy instead of thinking I should wait until summer. My saved 45 cents wil still get spent, maybe on a boutique relish. Mentally I will be in a better head space about enjoying that avoado and relish.

Look, these things might have been hard to do in 1960 when the ledgers were done longhand with quill pens. We've got computers today and can process any rules the government want to implement.

Exactly, this is not difficult to implement and it is scare mongering to suggest otherwise, which is probably where Cullen was all those long years ago.;-)

  • Hard News: Fighting On,

I wish I had the ability to drink it , it sounds fun. :)

All one needs, is to start with a dram of Laphroaig, and let your taste buds guide you down the yellow brick road.It is the one and only lesson needed to be a willing and able civilised member of such an elite group. ;)
