  • Hard News: Inimical to the public good,

My thanks to Mark and all the others who have made this thread a good discussion.

Are there any other sites or web enabled applications such as hypem, lasfm, emusic, metacritic....that music lovers should be aware of? (Hypem just found me a Queens of the Stoneage cover of an Elliott Smith song, that is sublime).

For what it's worth, I think a subscription service for the individual artists is perhaps the way to go. Couple of dollars a month for access to a range of content (live versions, B-sides, demos...whatever) and some sort of update about what is going on, particularly when the world is so big, with so much variety and a fan's location is so small/limited.

The provision of a subscription type service may also keep an artist ticking over with things to produce for the net and may be a somewhat natural by-product of the creative process. (perhaps even covering situations where the creative process was a bit dry last month, so here's a couple of tracks from an old gig).

As a fan do I want to listen to the same old album versions?...Not really, but it beats not listening at all. Pales by comparision with listening to a variety of rich, alternate recordings and gives people the thrill of listening to something new again/feeding the addiction.

  • Hard News: Inimical to the public good,

Unfortunately for the music industry, a revolution occured that broke the (effective) monopoly of physcial distribution and wiped away much of the process by which demand was monetised. The risks of physical distribution have been overcome by scalable infrastructure and a digital product. (ignorning the promotion activity)

With the playing field radically altered, consumers are a lot less keen to buy at the old monopoly price.

Sadly for musicians & the recording industry (as distinctly separate from distribution) the huge reduction in the saleable price of a track, has impacted the perception of value for their labours.

For the distributors, the cost of their protection/regulation far outweighs the benefit which they seek to derive. Their market changed and they have failed to adapt. They are lumbering bohemeths in an age where light & nimble will get the job done.

I wonder if the book publishers are trembling at the prospect of the e-book breaking their physical monopoly in a similar way, or perhaps they are salivating, waiting for their industry's iPod moment. Perhaps it's a combination of both.

  • Field Theory: Geniuses,

Just fired up Genius on SJD's Down a hole. Of 25 songs, Faith No More's Evidence (yeah!), Jose Gonzalez covering Teardrop and a track each from PJ Harvey & Beirut are the only non-NZ selections. I'm fairly sure that this is not representative of my collection. It looks like Genius has swallowed whatever last.fm had.

  • Field Theory: Geniuses,

Hmmm OK I'll give Genius a go. I'm a little bit skeptical about apple collecting all that info about music collections, thus attempting to quantify how much of the music collection iceberg remains under the water. Also the evil little hook that iTunes will have to know about the whole collection (which it keeps on losing and then re-indexing) is almost too much to bother with.

I do hope that Genius when I ask it about any of the Phoenix Foundation tracks or SJD doesn't just indicate that these are like any (every, or ALL) NZ music, like last.fm. As per some of the comments in Media 7 last week, I am over the whole excessively patriotic "Like this if you love NZ" idea/media whitewash.

  • Hard News: The joke that went too far,

If anyone is still awake after my comment about browsers, I'd encourage them to view the Media7 that Russell linked to earlier.

Ater reading many/most "news articles", I find myself feeling that I've gained absolutely nothing in doing so and consumed a collasal waste of time.

    Well played Media 7 team!

  • Hard News: The joke that went too far,

As much as I think Russell should never mention Whaleoil on PAS again and that the use of a honey trap is underhand, I take a small amount of pleasure from the fact that Whaleoil might just be smart enough to have doubt about any info (scandalous or otherwise) that is brought to him in future.

@Steve Barnes & Evan Yates regarding the browsers. I have been dedicating this week to the use of "other" browsers. Chrome is OK. It's "incgonito mode" is a feature that I think will be adopted by the competition. Safari seems like a step in the right direction with the use of 'ctrl-back arrow' to go back, other than Safari has completely frozen 2 days in a row. When the other browsers freeze & fail, I find myself reverting to (my gold standard) Opera, which for it's 'rewind' & 'fast forward' features and the zoom (rather than Safari's text only zoom), the speeddial and the ease of use in ad-blocking. I'm constantly finding myself attempting to use rewind and fast-forward in the other browsers and wishing that my little experiment with other browsers was over.

  • Hard News: Entertainment news,

I saw Neil for the first time earlier in the year. I hope he does a couple from his acoustic set in addtion to some more of the traditional BDO fare.

Big-Ups to Jose for that interview with the dude from Black Books last year. That interview is one that I hope I never forget.

  • Readers' Tips,

Hadyn & Paul (and others who spend a fair chunk of time online) try Opera.

Lots of shortcuts and lots of innovation. Keyboard arrow keys become "last page", "next page" rather than having to use the mouse. Do away with the Google toolbar by using the Address bar and your search term prefixed with a simple "g " or any of the other supported search engines including a History search ("h ") and find in page search ("f "). Firefox seems to follow where Opera has boldly gone before...

  • Hard News: This whole, glorious trainwreck,

Really, Russell, you've brought it on yourself. This guy's a dick, nothing more and nothing less, so who cares what he posts on his blog? Just as long as it doesn't seep onto publicaddress. Please, don't contaminate yourself.

I concur. "Never pat a burning dog" springs to mind.
