  • Speaker: A conversation from belief,

A while ago, I agreed to come on as a guest on Newstalk ZB’s Real Life with John Cowan, which is produced by the Christian Broadcasters Association, where Francis is on the board (er, no he isn't -- see below).

It was a good experience. It’s nice to be able to talk to a believer about not believing without a gasket being blown. John also understood my point about Youth for Christ and similar evangelism projects aimed at young people.

I know people who still feel bad about what they regarded as a manipulative nature of YFC rallies where they felt under pressure to step forward and commit themselves to Jesus. Even as a teenager, I was unnerved at what was said and done at the one rally I attended. That I was able to raise those ethical questions and get a good hearing was impressive.

When they show a return on their $35 million, perhaps then you could argue that the model had worked. Until that time, I’d suggest they’re wandering into TiVo and Igloo territory without an up-to-date map.

I meant the existing territorial rights model for global TV distribution, which is currently still the one that can be said to work, although not without facing growing challenges.

True, that’s conflating production and distribution. Even Netflix US, etc, aren’t producing much of the content they distribute.

The interesting thing is that they're increasingly in direct competition with HBO, which continues to produce plenty of TV, including some of the defining television of its era. What HBO is facing is a falling-off of its traditional cable subscriber revenue.

I think I've spotted your problem. Your business model is obsolete.

If by obsolete, you mean "the one that currently works".

That James Milne track is sublime!

It's on his Chant Darling album, with vocal overdubs. Pretty neat to hear the original take.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Alfie,

A couple of years later I was fortunate to be working for TV3’s 20/20 programme when we finally succeeded in exposing Fahey. Same story, same lawyers, same threats. The difference this time was TV3 management who stood behind us 100% and allowed us to produce a powerful story.

That, sir, is a Better Work Story.

I think we’re desperately defending Taiwan because we’ve lost China.

“Perhaps the key word there is *funded* TV 3 news & CL are probably unfunded.”

They are. As are One News and Seven Sharp.

    As is Shortland Street.

Is Shortland Street the shining success of the contestable funding model? Nurtured early, delivered audiences and social goals and built the screen industry skill base, then stood on its own two feet. Or moved out to go flatting or something.
