  • Up Front: I'll Be in My Bunk,

This is slightly OT but I just can’t figure out if this is for real: teen demon-slayers.

I mean we all love Buffy , but most of us don’t think it’s a documentary.

Jackie, Lilith, I’m afraid you have been assimilated by the PAS hivemind.

I know, I know, I was just thinking that as I hit "post". But I'm happy in my delusions. ;-)

I can’t help feeling that this sort of thing keeps going because if there’s one way to ensure that you can make everyone feel like they’re a sinner in need of saving, it’s to focus on masturbation and sexual fantasies. At some level arousal is an autonomic function; it’s like condemning eating or breathing.

That's a really good point. I just find all this stuff so deeply depressing. So depressing I may have to go and look at some porn.

And I <3 Jayne! Man, I miss that programme.

that’s what happens here – real connection and engagement with each other

    +1

Why I hang out here! If I say something, I know I’m being heard, and I'm eager to hear other people and learn from what they have to say. And it’s about the only place I know on the internet where people can disagree while still being polite and friendly to each other. Everyone’s got something to offer.

There have been times when I’ve been tempted to threaten doctors with a rolled up newspaper while chanting “We’re going to stop being a patronising dick-bag, yes we are, diddums” in soothing baby-talk tones.

Craig, you just made my day. :-)

Empirically, I don’t know if the media has ever been that good at owning their mistakes without a lawyer twisting their arms. What may well have changed is, for better and worse, we live in a culture where people are more sophisticated (and adversarial) in their relationships with media and the old model of the handful of outlets serving as “gatekeepers” is breaking down.

The big music companies failed to embrace the possibilities of the internet for so long. Rather than get their customers on board with paid-for downloading, collaborative filtering and special offers…they damned and sued them. I think there’s an echo of this attitude in the way big media companies seem to view their consumers – as both dumb and difficult. Yes, the rise of internet culture and citizen journalism threatens their old business models, but surely they’re better to embrace change while they still can. Getting your customers onside and harnessing their skills to add value to your product has to be win-win.

I don’t think the article addressed ‘natural birth’ at all. There are in fact many benefits to a non-interventionist approach to childbirth- which the article didn’t mention. This does, of course, always need to be weighed up against the risks to mother and child.

My info may be out of date, but I seem to recall a large study in the Netherlands some years back finding that the risks to mother and baby were higher in hospital births than in home births for low-risk deliveries . The reason being that higher levels of intervention carry their own risks.

Hopefully not this fictional university :)

Nah, I'm pretty sure you can't get Canterbury Draught in the Seychelles. :-)

TVNZ should have a corrections and clarifications page on their website, like the Guardian.

Is this a new feature? I know I've written to the Guardian more than once about factual errors and never heard back and the original copy was never changed. One complaint was about an internet scam issuing fake qualifications claiming to be from the "University of Canterbury" which the article said was fictional. Perhaps this is a small point to people in the UK, but there are a lot of us here with degrees from this fictional place. :-)
