And a column shifter! My only Hillman was a Californian
Awesome! Still dreaming of the Sunbeam Rapier Series 3a Convertible. Now that’s a car of privilege.
ETA: 'And a column shifter!' Funny how I'd forgotten that added complication, as it just seemed 'normal'. He did look rather bemused.

Aw, go on – do it!
Ok, just a little. The Gazelle was our wedding car. The funniest part was when the rather nice hotel we stayed in, with valet parking, had to ask us to park it ourselves, because of all those nasty gears, and that clutch thingy. Speaking of which, the first thing I had to do when I got the Superminx in Wellington was change the clutch.
Of course they’re a poet’s car, to be sure;
…
On the floor of her bedroom lie blazer and shorts,
And the cream-coloured walls are be-trophied with sports,
And westering, questioning settles the sun,
On your low-leaded window, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn. The Hillman is waiting, the light’s in the hall,
The pictures of Egypt are bright on the wall,
My sweet, I am standing beside the oak stair
And there on the landing’s the light on your hair.By roads ‘not adopted’, by woodlanded ways,
She drove to the club in the late summer haze,
Into nine-o’clock Camberley, heavy with bells
And mushroomy, pine-woody, evergreen smells.
…John Betjeman A Subaltern’s Love Song.

I’m impressed by that.
Also, when people fall off the rails, you don't just abandon them to the wolves (unless they deserve it, of course ;-) ), you put effort into maintaining the ethos of the community, while acknowledging the needs of the individual, often behind the scenes. As a recipient of such efforts, it was appreciated, just so you know. Emma deserves a special mention here too, among others.
Damn, and I was going to talk about cars.

all that special-vocabulary-as-weapon stuff
Had to go back a page to catch up. It's not generally like that here, but the editorial oversight committee has some pretty big props apostrophe but even my years as an EFL teacher didn't prepare me for the high standard of prose encountered here for the most part.

Yeah, I mean if it hasn't reached copyright or been Goodwinned by page 7, we just aren't doing it right.

(EXCEPT- Humber Super Snipes, a car I am still vaguely in love with
The largest Commer trucks had a really fantastically innovative two-stroke engine.
I think with three of us, we could turn this into a car thread. My ARA Bus Yellow (the old ones – think back a few years) Hillman Superminx was a keeper, until I sold it to a friend and replaced it with a Singer Gazelle. Ahh, the Rootes Group. They don’t make ’em like they used to. Suspension never had such freedom.

Flipping heck, when I started writing that post, I was still on page 4.
Yep, there's a time when you just have to sit back and watch the waves crashing on the shore, because keeping up requires ninja type skills, or stimulants.
I don't have statistics, but, apart from a few exceptions, it seems to me that threads do start to approach 140 characters or less after a certain period. Which is why I've come to enjoy the the multi-verse approach between here and Twitter.
ETA: I'm really randomising the reply to button today. Sorry.

Apart form the natural human response while watching on the news last night, it sickens me further to think of the potential for another innocent to become part of a media beat up, or a political sound bite.
