  • Hard News: Unusual Democracy,

The cat isn't current. I mean, even friggin' Sideswipe has already covered it.

And this thing with the streakers... Since when were we so goddamn American? What are we, Puritans?

  • Hard News: Things we needed to hear,

My perception of the police changed premanently when I (foolishly, I guess, but I was a baggy trousered 15 yr old) had a (small, folding) pocket knife on me on the way into a concert.

The woman at the gate gave me a ticket to get it back on the way out, so I carried on my way... Only to be followed and accosted by a couple of cops, they proceeded to call me a "fucking little cunt" and told me that if I tried to get my pocket knife back, they'd be taking me down to the station.

You kiss your mother with that mouth, orificer?

The vast majority of police I've known (including a couple I trained with in martial arts) have been normal genuine guys, but they tolerate the fuckwits in their own ranks. (One of them joked with me over a beer once about how violent, stupid and mean the team policing guys all were. With a smile on his face!)

Unlike others in here, I suspect things are going to get even worse, since they reduced the requirements to become a cop in order to fill the politically driven higher police numbers, you can now have a record and be a cop, and possibly even worse you can now be a wee man and be a cop. Normal bully cops are bad enough, how much worse will a short-man-syndrome bully cop be?

That's a nice puffy chest you have there little fella.

I'm honest and law abiding (I don't smoke pot, I don't steal, I don't drive drunk, I do little other than work hard, write about noodles, cut video and build web things), I'm a business owner, I'm a professional... and I just flat out don't trust or respect the police as a group. (Individuals, as I've alluded, are a different story.)

"I've never looked at my handcuffs and baton the same way since that afternoon with Debbie." Get better work stories.

  • Hard News: TVNZ on Demand actually…,

This really is a good start.

Annoyed by the "catchup" episodes, sure play 50 second clips of shows that haven't played yet, but how much more money are they going to make out of a show that's already played here? How much money does Unauthorised History of New Zealand make after its first airing? $1?

Might be an interesting requirement for NZ On Air funding that publically funded content go up on a site like this after some reasonable duration from first airing.

Good fun watching the 1977 Top Town final, Howard Morrison is so young! Such a different time.

(And I really don't care how much advertising they play, there are bills to pay and I'd far rather arseholes like Sony pay them than I do.)

Anyway, good on TVNZ for not completely sucking this time.

  • Hard News: 5.30 Follies,

Wowie, TVNZ3? Which colon did that fall out of?

Was the problem with having "Free" in the name? (If so, allow me to suggest TView. Even 3VNZ sounds nicer, though it still looks about as poetic as their nom de turd.)

If you're sitting at your desk all day thinking up new names for the company instead of sorting out PVRs for launch? Well, I humbly submit that perhaps you should quit and do something you have an aptitude for. Perhaps you could be a policeman? You wouldn't believe the perks!

Ihug, between parties, managed to build a terrestrial digital TV network 7 years ago. (Or is it 8 now?)

Even Foodtown stocks cheap-ass PVRs. They're not exotic technology!

Smoosh the two together and you're done.

(Oh, and the Ihug set top boxes? Yeah, they had modems in them when they were still current technology - instead of giveaways you could expect to find in the bottom of a box of cereal like today.)

  • Hard News: Introducing GodTube,

And another thing, this is Russell's site, he can shit on whatever the hell he wants to without answering to you or anyone else.

(But he still wasn't shitting on what you seem to think he was shitting on.)

  • Hard News: Introducing GodTube,

    Wow, Mark.

I think you're really wide of the mark, I don't think our Russ was poking fun at all. I urge you to read what Russell said again, if you can wipe the scales from your eyes for just a moment.

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment,

Just whitelist the damn site. It's not hard, right click the adblock button in the bottom right corner of your Firefox window and choose whitelist this whole site. Done.

    Goddamn freeloader.

And, yes, I hate the Vodafone ads as well, not because they're ads, but because they're Vodafone. Fuck Vodafone. Incompetent, customer hostile, wankers.

  • Hard News: Back when I worked in the…,

Russell, don't worry about the Auckland Blend, I thought it was good fun. Nice to chat to a bunch of like minded folk and such, and the BotY boys were great.

Maybe it would have helped if the panel was split?

The corporate folk might have had more opportunity to talk if they hadn't been on a table with Rob, and Rob may have been tempered if he'd been with other guys that get things done.

But I've never run a panel, so I might be entirely wrong.

Another thing, during the break times, it might have been a good idea to get everyone to move out of the main space, where we were forced into a long sort of a crescent shape, and down into one of the side areas?

Jeeze it was nice up there though.

  • Hard News: The New Boss,

The problem with Torchwood is that it's... complete shit. It sort of picked up in the season final (aired a week or so ago) but too little too late. The new Dr Who continues to be great fun though, as I'm sure anyone who has seen the Christmas Special will agree. I think David Tennant is the best Dr yet.

In fact, even the new-new spinoff, Sarah Jane Smith Adventures - even though it appears to be aimed at an even younger age group than the regular Dr Who - is more entertaining than Torchwood.

Of course, it would help if one of the main characters wasn't a drug rapist psychopath that flies off the handle at the slightest provocation, or that all the rest of the team are almost entirely incompetent, or even that this supposedly vast secret organisation, now over a centruy old, and the last line of defence against alien marauders, is a staff of 5 in a basement in Cardiff. Uh?

I think they really missed the mark very badly with the series.

The iPhone though, is seriously hot. I'd love to get one, and I'm not an Apple guy at all.

I am, however, highly suspicious that the reality of the iPhone won't be quite what the Stevenote made it out to be, never mind the cost of mobile data usage on Vodafone New Zealand, or that the only person I've heard of that has played with a unit who doesn't work at Apple revealed that many of the applications weren't functional but merely JPG mockups, no indeed - the worst thing I've heard is that the unit will actually be a closed box - i.e., it might well be running OS X (if a drastically gutted version) but you can't put your own applications on it.

Also, Apple have a seriously bad track record in choosing decent construction materials for their units - and phones tend to get pretty rough treatment.

I'm sure version three will deliver on all the promises, but by then I'm sure Windows Mobile will be even better than it already is (and it's pretty good in my experience) and the other phone manufacturers, who will have been given a big fright by this one, will have gone a bit further than painting their phones gold and calling them special editions.

(Just as an aside, I wonder where this puts The Steve's claims that he'd never make another handheld, when he killed the Newton?)
