Just to quibble.
It was the subsequent laws banning subsistence & traditional fresh water fishing methods, the introduction of Trout & Salmon along with grazing (removes shade and increases water temp, pollution, & predation) that massively impacted tuna numbers.
1866 Oyster Fisheries Act prevented Maori from commercial fishing. The Quota Management scheme still bans small commercial - read sustainable & seasonal - fishing.
Prior to this Maori fishing supported the colonies in NZ.
An increase in population required they work and so an easy answer was to ban maori & give the industry to the new colonists. -
"And didn't the Celts bring the rat here in 1120?"
Scott won't give you credit but are always quick to take it ;)
Massey thought he was from Israel - these dudes need a Geography lesson.

This time of year my knees & elbows tell me to move back home to Blenheim or anywhere further north than Christchurch.
If you're inside in Blenheim you can only tell the season by the colour of the grass on the Whither Hills - Green is winter, brown is summer, and flickering glow of orange is February.

I thought a bus ride around an island with less than 5kms of road a bit 'rich' & went to their charming local museum instead.
Love the transposed error in horseshoe bay and 1/2 moon bay having been confused. What of the building & property boom on the island?

I can't see Key lasting the full term, but he'll win the election, but with Williamson who needs Selwyn MP Connolley?
I don't mind Brownlee (he's my MP although I've never voted for him), and I like English. Nick Smith is a bit sensitive to the sun & needs a high collared shirt but not too bad.
I just dread Lockwood, his hand has been exposed with Clydesdale but I just hope English may play some part in controlling him.
And I'm not going to be ballanced here - Labour are on a hiding to nothing & I'm voting Green.

I end up doing more work (& therefore avoiding the same) on Sunday evenings than any other time, anyway.
Yesterday I went to a "This is your Life John Master" aka Col. (rtd) Master ONZM, MC(from Borneo) at the Papanui RSA.
I think he contributes to kiwiblog, but that aside. He was the last commander of 161 Bty in Viet Nam. His affectionate nick-name was "Motherhen" because of his concern for his troops.
A few wore the white cross of Long Tan & a few more orange ribbons, most wore their medals from that time (the yonger ones there had the good grace not to confuse the issue and didn't wear ours). He's 72 or there abouts and was responsible for our Govt acknowledging that agent orange was sprayed on our troops. John kept the maps showing the areas of operations which included the spraying.

I used to hear things about Westport, but nothing this bad. It explains why Nelson has had some nasty incidents too.
I used to believe white power et al were only a danger to themselves. Little fifedoms exacting revenge kneecappings etc on their own 'disloyal' members.

Anyone else hear dueling banjoes in the distance reading about the missing Korean student and Japanese tourist, around Westport.
It doesn't get much more serious than murder, but what the motivation might have been is chilling.

The Herald was wrong and has assumed Elizabeth had taken Marshalls last name.

"if 200 metres was too far, she might be advised to call the venue and make arrangements in future."
That would be the pick up point at the door which was blocked by the police & DPS.
I've managed to pick up my 80+year old Grandparents with just the normal crowd hassel that you get at the Townhall as it is designed for.Being of average hight I was a little intimidated walking in on Jenny Shipley - her hubby & two DPS dudes in a small shop in Cashel St, everyone of them looking down on me. The shop floor sloped towards the doorway which didn't help, but I wasn't moved on either.
