    Attachment

How bad are things getting at Mediaworks? Really bad. Weldon has taken a company the was operating profitably under his predecessor, Sussan Turner, and headed it for a $15m loss – knocking as much as $150m off its market value in the process.

And meanwhile Sussan Turner, has been snapped up to serve on the TVNZ board.

Jeez, the way some people read what they want into things...

Du Fresne is such an ass.

In both those screeds he's so set on reducing both those men to nothing more than drugs. For goodness sake, Dave McArtney went back to university after the bands and completed a BA in Renaissance poetry and an MA in music. He was a much-loved tutor at Mainz for more than a decade. Just a really sweet, decent man. Which is more than can be said for Karl du Fresne.

  • Hard News: A better thing to believe in, in reply to chris,

It is, I’d never have guessed, I’ve been waiting for someone to ask what position he played.

Me? Hooker or loosehead prop. Although there was one glorious season at No.8 ...

Aaaaaanyway, my grandfather died between the last Rugby World Cup and this one, and I always used to watch the big matches with him even though my knowledge is incredibly spotty, so I suppose I'll watch a few and have a gin in tribute to him.

    Aw, nice.

Photo nerdism: The two women in the Silver Scroll photo with M Chunn are (L>R) Bronwyn Teuton (sp?) and Kaye Glamuzina, both from Radio NZ National Music at that time. Naughty CMS, naughty!

Oh great, thank you. I'll update that. I didn't recognise Kaye in the pic!

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to Greville Whittle,

For a PR professional these are very dumb moves. I don’t know if she’s working on the “no such thing as bad publicity” angle or actually thinks her attack will cause the Scouts NZ to back off. Mediaworks should be wondering if this particular cog might break and cause problems in the machine

Mediaworks' senior management is way off the reservation on this. It's fucking nuts.

Is that the same as payola?

Not really. Paid "ad libs" have always been a thing in commercial radio. They can be very awkward during times of tragic news events:

"The death toll continues to climb – and have you thought about a visit to Gary's Super Value Cars in Pakuranga? They really are the best."

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine,

A very interesting Stop Press story on Scout.

They talk to Glen Kyne, director of integrated content at Mediaworks:

At present, the display ads on the site are promoting the upcoming season of The Block NZ and other MediaWorks assets (there's also an ad for the movie Everest). Cross promotion is a big part of its remit, he says, but display advertising is not the main focus. Instead, he says it will be concentrating on native advertising and integrating brands into Scout TV.

He says this is the first time MediaWorks has really done native advertising properly. Its integration team has plenty of experience working brands into TV shows, although he says there are often restrictions with licensed formats like The Block. And its radio arm does it every day, he says, and has been doing it for years. So it’s not a huge stretch to bring that discipline online and “work with brands that want to tell their story” in a way that makes sense to Scout's audience.

Well, they're being upfront about it. I can see why no one wanted it anywhere near the newsroom.
