  • Hard News: A better thing to believe in, in reply to Gould S,

I agree with your analysis Steve. The transnational corporations Adidas and AIG are prime examples of how these corporations have a great influence on the spread and flow of information to the masses.
If such dominant flows were not in place I don't believe that John Key and the media would portray the All Blacks as 'more important' world leaders than other New Zealand sport teams.
An argument quite separate from their successes on the field.

Well, I can't tell you what to believe, but I cannot see the slightest basis for it.

Quite. Smith had a private picture of himself published everywhere without her permission, including the New Zealand Herald.

    That sentence has issues.

    Heh. It did

    i.e. Aaron Smith’s d**k pictures scandal.

I do wish you'd picked an example where the All Black in question had actually done something wrong, not one where he was the victim of others' arseholitude.

Quite. Smith had a private picture of himself published everywhere without his permission, including the New Zealand Herald.

The actual transgressions vary. Israel Dagg and Corey Jane made a dumb decision to go to a pub after taking sleeping pills, but they didn't actually hurt anyone. And it still gets included in newspaper stories about them, four years later.

Julian Savea did hurt someone and gave an apparently (you'd bloody hope) genuine apology and completed police diversion, but it got reported by the Daily Telegraph, ESPN et al. So it wasn't exactly swept under the carpet.

If anyone's mystified by the "truck and trailer" terminology, England's first try is in these highlights. The England No.2 has the ball and a couple of times completely unbinds from the maul –– meaning he has a bunch of players ahead of him (and therefore offside) running interference.

It should have been a penalty against England, but instead Fiji copped a penalty try and a sin-binning.

The Japanese players and supporters celebrate. Everyone's crying.

The Japanese played like fifteen little energiser bunnies throughout the game, their tackling was superb, they won all of their own scrums, most of their lineouts and they even managed to monster the Springboks with their rolling maul.

Their second try was one of the best set-move scores I've ever seen. Just perfect. Take a bow, Eddie Jones, take a bow.

That rates as one of the best games of rugby I've seen. Ever!

Yes. Even knowing the score when I watched the replay this morning didn't spoil it for me.

Ahh... sublime rugby. And not a politician in sight.

    Quite.

John Campbell previews the match for the Sunday Star Times, in his inimitable style:

Tomorrow will not be easy. There is the occasion, there is the weight of history and expectation, and there are the (Springbok-beating) Argentinians themselves. As all rugby followers know, the Argentinian team is built on the front eight's grunt and muscle. And, as all rugby followers know, the All Blacks hate being pushed about in scrums. This alone should make the contest the equivalent of a rogue episode of Thomas the Tank Engine, in which Henry and Gordon get pissed, run into each other on a disused siding, and smash together until the Fat Controller does his nut.

If Karl du Fresne wasn't being so deadly serious in his latest column on "sex, drugs & rock and roll", it'd be in the comedy section.

    He's such an ass.

It's nowhere near as funny as the blue fit he had on his blog after Chris Knox suggested The Beatles were punk rockers in the Hamburg years.

Karl du Fresne: the only person in the world to remain outraged by punk rock 40 years on.

I think it was a good call of his - by sport, he meant team sport. There are a lot of very positive aspects of team sports that I got a lot out of throughout my life.

I found schoolwork pretty easy and it was good for me to participate in something I wasn't gifted at, and to rub shoulders with kids I'd never have encountered academically.

On the other hand, the year I didn't make my club's under-14 open team and wound up captaining the Under 15 under 8 stone B team – the only B-team in its competition, we didn't win a game all season – was an instructive early experience in leadership.

From the bits 'n' pieces 'n' edges I have heard (radio) she manages to keep her dignity amongst the shenanagins. However there is not an inevitability to working in these environments-professionals can conscientiously eject.

There's no reason at all that she should make herself unemployed (or even refuse an opportunity). Jesus, it's not like they're eating babies in the morning.
