What the hell did we do wrong that the next generation isn’t better than us???

I actually think kids today in general are pretty awesome. The teens and twentysomethings I know are, and I’m grateful that my sons went through school when they did, and not to the schools that I did.

A better question might be why does this culture still exist?

I don’t attend concerts anymore. They simply are not safe spaces for me to be in, even with my husband. I don’t feel safe.

And that’s not good enough New Zealand.

    Damn right it's not.

On another note, I was talking last night to a guy whose band played Rhythm & Vines this summer.

They'd planned to stay the whole three days, but shipped out as soon as they could, turned off by the spectacle. He said he was just glad they hadn't been placed in the youth camping area for the night they did have to stay – he was 23!

    preloaded and privileged

    That's a good description.

I don’t remember it being that way. I didn’t experience it. I didn’t see my teen cohort do it.

    That was my experience.

I don’t question a single thing Selina relates above. Indeed, I remember it. It’s hard to believe now that until the Crimes Act amendments of 1985, there was no offence of rape within marriage. It was sufficiently front of mind that for a while I wore a Men Against Rape badge everywhere.

But when I was 20, in the early 1980s, my peer group was almost exclusively in the music scene. And like you, I don’t recall music events being associated with the kind of public cruelty described in the post (not just the two main incidents, but the ones described by Genny Stevens to me, both of them involving young men bullying older women). We knew back then that some older men in the industry were more or less abusers and we reviled them for it.

I think it was forgivable of me to feel upset that this kind of thing is part of the kind of music events I go to in 2016. I was gobsmacked recently by a Facebook conversation I had with Sarin Moddle (erstwhile host of 95bFM’s Sex with Sarin) about many young men’s sexual expectations, which she believes have been shaped in a bad way by mainstream porn, to the point where they’re basically not safe sexual partners (or at best, seriously dud roots).

I’m flummoxed by the things that young women share online from dating services – I’ve just got no reference point for the aggression they encounter. I had to think about that a lot when my autistic son tried a dating service.

So, well, maybe it’s the same, but different. It feels different.

think morning radio shows and their ilk

There's a very strong element of bullying in what those shows do.

Has anyone made any complaints to the Police. It would be good if TV3 could follow through as the Employer of Kim Vinell? Will anyone else make a complaint. The Police kept saying throughout the roastbuster abuse that no one had made a complaint. TV3 are in the perfect position to follow this up.

I think Kim feels she made her point by confronting the idiots.

“I didn’t realise how offensive many people found Jarrod & Sacha reducing to women to genitals when I was championing their work.

Jarrod's blurt when he heard Kirsty was being attacked online was not his finest moment. I'm pretty sure he assumed it was men who were doing it. I don't recall "championing his work" since then, but are you saying I should never praise anything he writes? And Sacha? If it's what I'm thinking of, you might want to check the details. I think you may have it wrong.

I also didn’t know that we had a commentator notorious for their dubious interpretations of consent.

I don't know what this means, but I know you've been alluding to it elsewhere. I'd rather you emailed me about it, rather than continually alluding to something I know nothing about, which isn't helpful.

As an aside, I went to a big concert last year that was one of the most friendly and chilled shows I can recall.

There was a remarkable age-range – from teens to sixtysomethings – and a lot of women, including groups of middle-aged women enjoying themselves without male accompaniment.

The headliners of this musical idyll? Bogan totems AC/DC.

I have a photo of the harasser and the two women with him, btw. They're laughing. They really look like Young Nats.
