That's the fountain. Your pic makes it look nicer than it generally does during the day.

Well the pic must have been done in the 1980s because the Forsyth Barr building isn't there. So, taking that into account, we can forgive you the trousers, and thanks for the pic. (Clothing crimes -- another Capture thread?) Did you get wet standing there?

The now-vanished 'water feature' badly needed those tiles to relieve the bleak expanses of stainless steel
I liked the original stainless steel Stewart because it was so seventies' silly; and people used to put bubbles in the works so it all overflowed in an anarchic way. I loathed the 90s pyramid, though the tiles by young people was a great idea that could have been used more effectively elsewhere.

Could we do a fountains/water Capture thread?

Thanks Gudrun; I like the dandelion effect - it's better without the water. I liked the Stewart fountain too before it was buggered by the modernisers.

Epic statue that -- I've never looked closely at it before. It's always been there, in my life and embedded in my brain (first met an eventual husband on its steps one New Year's Day). I'm treasuring what's left in the city rather than mourning what isn't. (the building behind looked good but was hideous to work in).

I like a good fountain; we need more around town.
I'd like a tactile/sensory earthquake memorial like a labyrinth made of pounamu, or a large rill/small river of spring water with pounamu boulders plonked along a winding path that you could follow, touch, dip your hands in, children young and old could play in, in a sunshiney corner of town. Something symbolising life and regeneration.

This is standard for every government I have seen in NZ
This is worse: they spent the whole of the first term positioning; now all hell is breaking loose simultaneously on many fronts. From education to mining to public service cuts to privatisation and anything else on their bucket list. They scary thing about this lot is the laser-like focus the likes of Key and Joyce bring to their task; most pollies can be deflected by politics itself; they are not.

They might have had the ideas in mind for ages, but the execution looks increasingly haphazard.
I reckon that as the polls dive the Nats are going to ram repugnant-to-most-voters actions through asap -this year and next so they can pork-barrel their way through their last year of this term.

In Victoria Square on the Colombo St side about half-way along. Can't miss it; big old stone fountain. Monolithic rather than artistic but the lights made it look good.
And I have been wondering about the floral clock on the other side of the square near the courts. Such a fine piece of kitsch -- all bright bedding plants and a great big pair of clock hands on a slight hillock. http://www.ccc.govt.nz/cityleisure/artsculture/artinthecity/clocks/floralclock.aspx
