Actually, I think he's 63. Almost pension age. But for his status in the NZ music world over many decades it's a bit like sending Keith Richards to jail for drugs. What will it achieve?

Didn't Garth McVicar go to Finland with an official delegation of the last Labour government, led by Phil Goff I think. But IIRC he wasn't impressed.

Yes, even for the coeliacs.

Illustrates how stupid the drug laws are. He's no criminal. Just a gentle 62 year old who been entertaining with his music for four decades. What possible purpose does this conviction serve for anyone?

Hard News: Introducing: The New Zealand…, in reply to
Thanks for that link to the 1954 Mazengarb Report, Russell. It includes the following thoughtful comments:
"Just when, how long, and how often, children, adolescents, and even parents listen to the radio is something that has never been accurately determined in New Zealand. It is well known that young children listen after 7 p.m. and that adolescents listen until a very late hour, particularly on holidays, and for this last-named fact no allowance is made when the programmes are being arranged. Adolescents listening to the latest songs stimulate the demand for popular sheet music. It is the words of those "hits" that form the chief target for criticism expressed to this Committee. Popular songs are transitory in nature, and it is the tune, rather than the words, that makes an impression."
"Although television is not yet available in New Zealand, its introduction is inevitable. Overseas reports of its effects on children, adolescents, and even adults indicate that plans to minimize any harmful effects in New Zealand should be made without delay...The arrival of another visual and auditory influence will add weight to the suggestion made to the Committee that liaison should be established between all the various censoring authorities."

Tangentially, re clothing. Clare Curran (MP Dunedin South) has been kicked out of the House for wearing a Highlanders' shirt (the old one). Last year Jackie Blue (Nat MP) wore an All Whites' shirt in parliament but only got approving comments because she was wearing pearls with it.

Just a reminder that this is Wellington in winter. Neither frilly parasols nor big hair last long in horizontal southerly rain.
(Christopher, avoid Endnote if you have managed to so far. Do a manual bibliography even if it covers 40 pages. I was having so much trouble with my Endnote - incomplete refs, duplicates and inconsistent alphabetisation - that I turned it into a word doc for manual editing in the last couple of weeks before handing in.)

Just caught the end of a rare interview with Keri on Radio NZ. Recommend seeking it out through their website.

Southerly: One Hundred and Thirty-one…, in reply to
Lisa, thanks for those offers about learning to ride a bike. Wasn't for me personally. I can ride a bike having learnt on holiday in flat Hamilton when I was young. But I lived on a steep Wellington hillside and every house had lots of steps and hardly anyone had bikes (trolleys and the first generation skateboards were the wheels of choice). But I am often coming across adults who have never learnt to ride (just like others who have never learnt to swim). Much harder to learn as an adult. So good to hear some groups are on to it.

What about free adult learn-to-ride lessons for those who never did (such as those who grew up in hilly places)?
