Picture blatantly stolen from the Herald because without it we may forget how crazy this guy appears to be.

He looks like a ventriloquist's dummy with Key as his master.

My sister sent me this pic, nothing to do with moons or copyrights but an image of London's "preparations" for the "Games"

Ngai Tahu owned the old King Edward barracks site which is a big parcel on the other side of that block not too long ago. Don't know about now. A lot of big buildings around there are still fenced off, more are coming down every day. So it's ripe for a plan -- I would like to see locals get to use it; it is a prime corner of the city: near the gardens, the Arts Centre, the hospital, Hagley Park and what's left of "town". A convention centre and hotels would gobble it up and people like me wouldn't go there much. I learned to ride a bike on the riverbank along there when I was 17. I bought a white 10-speed at Penny Farthing in Manchester St by the river, couldn't cycle when I hopped on it on the riverbank, and by the time I reached Hagley park I was flying :-)

Back to Banks: he's too important a fish to let off the hook.

Maybe they should start reprinting those Peoples Republic of Christchurch T-shirts again. I was lucky enough to buy one of the originals.

So far from the truth these days though. And unless the left of far right gets organised soon the People's Republic days will be very distant. I tend to think that the protests are Hugh Pavletich and the Lynches (David Lynch is a brother) way of diverting the left and the vulnerable.

    Adds up
Some space for hotel rebuilds nearby I understand. I guess the land might be slightly more stable or something - unless the reasons are mainly pork-oriented.

Mmm; I smell bacon. The police station is right across the road from the Avon riverbank, I don't know its land status..

The copyright maximalist world would be a horrible one, and out of step with reality.

Agreed. I admit to a certain amount of Devil's advocacy here; but the property one is a duality I have not yet reconciled in my own head.I'm glad that my first love is creating gardens; a snip here, a twig there and a pocketful of seed don't injure my garden, my pocket, nor my feelings.

Digitally, you're leaving a perfectly usable coat or brolly behind. It's no longer a zero-sum game

But not a perfectly saleable "only you have this particular coat/photo" digital image. Exclusivity confers value in many markets -- how much would someone have paid for The Scream if there were 20,000 Screams instead of three or four.

As a creative type, I cannot understand why it is okay for a picture or an idea I might make to be taken over by another person for their gain or pleasure, when it would not be okay for me to take over something with a more physical presence (coat, brolly, car) that someone else wishes to sell.

Only if you permanently deprived the copyright holder use of their own work.

So I can borrow an umbrella or a coat from Bally's, as long as I return it soon after? Doesn't sound right to me.

how the hell can you really own an image?

I don't believe a person can "own" an image but s/he owns their interpretation of that image and the work (accrued creativity, skill, education) that has led to the production of that image.

there's another group on the other side of the room who just watch

I try on PA to under-share because my life and thinkings, while intensely interesting to me, are eclipsed by many others who think it and say it so much better.
