  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News, in reply to Carol Stewart,

Do you go to the end of term recitals? I'm the person sitting at the back reading the Bible.

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News, in reply to giovanni tiso,

Not everyone lives next door to the school, Giovanni Teachers come from all over Wellington, and it was bad enough even where we are and was a lot worse in many suburbs. The roads and footpaths were covered with snow and ice and cars and people were skidding in it, so it was good that schools closed.

We installed a pellet fire last year but it is a bit of a disappointment. The fan is quite noisy (and fires are supposed to be silent apart from occasional crackles), the pellets only come in huge heavy bags, and the design means the heat comes out of the top vent, not the bottom, so it is cold for the first metre above ground.

(That teacher wouldn't be Bernard by any chance?)

On an unrelated note, I have been impressed by the accuracy of the weather forecasts over the last couple of days. When they said the snow would arrive, it did, even to sea level in Wellington (even though that seemed pretty hard to anticipate only three days ago).

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News,

Since it is not something I will probably have occasion to say again for many years after this current cold spell, I just wanted to mention that it is snowing heavily outside my window – again.

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News,

We are stranded at home today in Wellington. Can't drive or walk outside on our mildy hilly street. Several 4 wheel drives have skidded outside trying to get up or down the road. The driveway, footpath and much of the road were covered in snow yesterday but it has thickened overnight and turned icy. Last night it was a struggle walking half a kilometre up a hill from the bus stop - very very slippery. The street lights went out. The electricity flickered off several times. Occasionally in winter there are biggish slips around here, but I'm a long time Wellingtonian and the last time we were really isolated like this was the 1968 Wahine Storm when we couldn't get out for three days.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

Rumour that Judith Collins has ordered police to drop charges against Arie S-V (and hopefully Michael too). Anyone heard any more?

  • Hard News: Is that it?, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

I didn't realise they were deported so fast. Was that reported anywhere as I missed it? That is an appalling example of man's inhumanity to man. I hope that cruel deporting government gets their karmic come-uppance.

  • Hard News: Is that it?,

I know of a young person who was sent to one of the six week boot camps. He went willingly and fully expected that there would be a job waiting for him when he finished, as that was the hype. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to be part of the plan at all. To go on the boot camp you have to go off the benefit. He now has to do a full reapplication and faces a three week stand down with no money before he can go on it again. One more let down vulnerable young person.

Another example of state ephebiphobia - a fear and loathing of young people (thanks Gordon Campbell).
