Impressed with Sunday persisting with this story tonight and bringing all the threads together. What the Minister said and tried to retract, the poisonous Laws reaction, the sorry police saga including apparently creating a false document to keep Arie in jail, and fighting diversion. Good interviewing. Worth finding on TV on demand for those who missed it.

Sunday on Sunday has update on Arie/Michael case.

Didn't Nostradamus or Edgar Cayce or one of those seers say something about the east and west coasts of the US falling into the sea?

And re the Arie stuff, thanks for the nice comments. I think this is an area of public policy where we are steadily progressing, even though still far to go.

Thanks 'Chris' but the real work came from the aspie self advocacy sector itself. They were on to it as soon as the story broke, found the first lawyer, set up a Justice for Arie-Smith Voorkamp page that has been very active and has gathered support internationally, went to the hearings and lobbied ministers and media. My only contribution was passing bits of information on.

Try the Arie thread for some spirited discussion, including some local activism against the terminology.

Hard News: 2011: The Year Of What?, in reply to
Resilience, that's what the year is probably about.
And with my sanctimonious hat on my personal challenge this year is to try - not to like as that is asking a bit much - to see the humanity in those whose ideas or actions I otherwise despise (spiritual people suggest stronger emotions of forgiveness or compassion, but that is harder to do). After all we are all made of the same recycled atoms and are part of a common species. That way you can accept them and move on, and they no longer bother you or have any power over you. You can waste a lot of energy on anger, frustration, jealousy and revenge, and better to save it for a bit of resilience practice.

I would like to know who the psychiatrist was who wrote the report. Forensic psychiatrists with detailed knowledge of autism are very rare in NZ. Perhaps that was a reason for delay - they had to import one?

Meanwhile, politely and graciously, Arie and Michael thank people for their support.

Regardless of the official spin, I still wonder about the role of the public interest, Police HQ and the minister's office in all of this. I think it is a victory for sustained community vigilance.
