  • Word of the Year 2006,

    Lyndon wrote

"How about that movie 'Eight Legged Freaks'?

    OMFG! Eight freaks with legs!"

Actually the original title for the film was Arach Attack but given the timing of its release (2002 I believe) Hollywood, in all of its infinite wisdom, decided it wouldn't work given what was expected to happen in Iraq.

    Seriously.

Back on topic - some words I have tried (and failed) to get in news stories this year:
    - pugnacious
    - indomitable
    - inimitable
    - dyspeptic
    - ebullient
    - choleric

    David,
as one who has journalistically poked around the Canterbury water situation for several years (before moving on to other pastures) I wish you the best with your endeavours. The trade off that has, and is, occurring with the farming interests is fascinating to observe. Add an ever changing scientific knowledge into the mix (eg the classifying of the water red zones) and you have a very heady mix.

I'd specifically recommend looking at the Central Plains Water scheme. Especially now Ngai Tahu have secured water take rights that the scheme's backers were depending on for their project.

  • Hard News: Of course it's about the book,

One thing I'd like to add here is something Nicky Hager said the other day regarding Don Brash as all this was hitting the head lines. I've paraphrased it as I can't find the exact story on the web

Regarding the hairdresser I suspect he/she listens to a TRN station. ZB had it in their 1 pm bulletin just before the press conference started.

I believe Jade Stadium does .. though it's hard to make out it's balance sheets as they're all tangled in with Christchurch City Council operations as the management company (Vbase) is part of CCHL (a Council owned trading company).

Not sure how it makes a buck as it gets maybe 1 test match, a couple of one dayers, and about 12 - 15 rugby games a year. Though they do a lot of conferences and host warehouse type sales on a regular basis so I guess that adds to the cashflow.

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

Anyone worried that by the time a decision is made the media will have nothing left to write about because every possible angle has already been done?

  • TVNZ's Freeview: how's it look?,

More local content .. yeah right. A dedicated news channel ... yeah right.

Remind me again what are the two most costly elements of TV production? Local programming and news maybe?

I'll be very surprised if the news channel is no more than a continual repeat of news stories, hefty great chunks of raw press conference footage, and journo's doing lengthy Q and A's with anchors.

I remember when Ralston first got the top job there was a talk of a return to regional news. This got the chop for the simple reason they didn't think they had the staff to do it. Now tell me if they can't make a fist of regional news how in hell will they make a go of a dedicated news channel?

And whatever did happen to TVNZ's investigative unit anyway?

    Just my cynical 2 cents.

Very sceptical about the $497 million dollar price tag. If it's above water and requires substantial piling building the base will cost a hefty amount.

If a main road roundabout costs a $500 thousand to a million bucks I can't see the sub-strata for the NZ Stadium coming in at under 200 million.
