I took some photos the other day of bits of things. Buildings reduced to their component materials.

    – people called for a “green city” through share an idea, and so the government is saying “look – we listened! Lots of parks!”. When actually as much, if not more, of the “green city” argument was around sustainability in a broad context – public transport options so we can reduce a dependency on cars and a need for carparks; streets with a more human scale so that pedestrians and cyclists felt more comfortable; development of mixed-used 3-4 storey buildings that brought businesses, offices and residents together into a more sustainable community.

    This.

And BTW it's great to have you on PAS, Ed Muzik! Your long form is even better than your tweets. :-)

Islander, I have no experience of the literary world, but I do know that here on PAS you are admired, respected, and loved. We are not your enemy.

We’ve still got a bit of cleaning up to do before we have a fully secular state.

    Yeah. National anthem, for starters...

  • Speaker: The gathering of the small tribe,

The NZ Post Book Awards are a celebration of ourselves and that “tribe” is growing in size and importance. They might not win bronze, silver or gold and thus command the front page of our newspapers or top the nightly news on television, but the writers are our people and of considerable importance.

    Absolutely!!
And thanks for writing this, Graham.

How would you force a church to marry LGBT people though? And how would you square that with giving people freedom of religion?

Freedom of religion isn't an absolute right -- it surely can't override certain other laws. For instance religions which allow polygamous marriage can't have such marriages legally recognised in NZ. AFAIK.

However it's one thing to say you can't do things that are prohibited by law, and another to say that you must do things allowed in law.

Churches seem to get away with gender-based job discrimination, so I'm guessing they won't be forced to solemnise marriages they don't want to. But I think the legalisation of gay marriage will put more pressure on them for change.
