  • Island Life: Page 3 Boy,

Mr Slack is letting this topless model business go to his head. Last night at the Great Blend, I brought the subject up and he asked "Do you want a preview?" and began to lift up his T-shirt. As a polite, well-mannered lady, I found this highly inappropriate and fainted, having to be revived with smelling salts (or was that the Karajoz coffee?)

  • Island Life: Page 3 Boy,

Of all the topics in PA System since its inception, I do believe that this is the one that has got the biggest response for the laydeez.

  • Hard News: Chew before swallowing,

When I was at high school ('88 - '92), many of my friends and I went through phases of not eating breakfast because logic dictated that eating makes you fat, and so therefore fewer meals means fewer kilograms.

One PE teacher would talk to us about the importance of having a good breakfast, but it's hard to be swayed by a frumpy old PE teacher (or rapping vegetables).

I also remember one of my friends declaring that from now on she was only going to eat "healthy food", which that day was represented by a box of Tiny Teddies.

I ate absolute rubbish for the first few years of high school - the sort of thing that would make any middle-class mother cry - but I did really well at school.

It wasn't until I was in my mid 20s that I learned about good nutrition.

  • Hard News: Foo, what a scorcher!,

It sounds like a brilliant weekend. I'm been eagerly following along with people's blogs. I hope the ideas from Foo weekend will inspire many choice things.

  • Hard News: I hope she does something interesting,

While Russell and others are away at Baa Camp/Kiwi Foo Camp, those of us who are back here can keep in touch with goings-on through the magic of blogs.

These are all the Baa attendees rockin' a keyboard that I've been able to find so far, but I'm sure there are more, and will be more written when it's all over.

I'm off to Kiwi Foo for the next few days

I'm really excited about this, so I expect that in the following week, there'll be lots of share both here and at the Great Blend!

I'm really warming to Hank and Mavis. They seem like quite a cool couple. I wouldn't mind going along with them on their next holiday.

  • Hard News: We're Blending again,

BTW, the museum's New Zealand Decorative Art gallery will be open when people arrive - if you haven't seen that, it's got some really cool stuff.

Including a fabric print by Public Address Great NZ Argument contributor ARD Fairburn!

  • Hard News: We're Blending again,

I enjoyed SJD at the last Auckland one, but found the music a bit distracting.

At all the Great Blends I've been to, it seems that people either want to stick around and listen to the band, or get away to a quieter spot and talk.

And usually this works really well. The last Auckland GB - at the Grey Lynn community centre - had indoor spaces where people could talk. But at the one before that - at Hopetoun Alpha, the talkers had to go outside, which wasn't so ideal.

The bands are usually awesome and very much appreciated, but sometimes it's nice to have a good old geeky conversation, and even better when you're not cast out with the smokers.

The Ballad of Hank and Mavis

    A. It seems like a lifetime ago. I was in the kitchen at the Broken Arrow in Espanola, New Mexico. She burst in, lookin' hot, lookin' bothered. "You gotta help me, Hank. I've killed him. He's dead." It was true, and I didn't know what to do, but she was my girl, so we got in my car and drove, drove, drove and didn't stop still we'd crossed the border.

    B. So we found a little fishing village on the Pacific coast and learned real fast how to blend in. I got a job washing dishes at Geraldo's, and Mavis did cleaning at a guest house. Not a day went by that I didn't think of running, of going home, but every day I stayed.

    C. In '87, we found out that Mavis' momma had passed. Life had been better since O'Flaherty's untimely demise, but being the widow of Espanola's most notorious smack daddy was never gonna be easy. I offered to drive Mavis back, but she said she didn't want to go. We could never go back.

    D. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right decision. We hurt a lot of people, but looking back, I know that we did make the right decision. We may be outlaws, but I've got my girl and she's just as beautiful as the day we met back in '74.

    E. We met these college kids – Alex and Olivia from Sacramento. They asked us if we were here on vacation or if we lived here. I looked at Mavis and then said to the kids, "We're on our honeymoon."
