Neither the family or friends would have felt it necessary to air their feelings, or the press had a field day, if the Select Committee hadn't been so foolish as to appoint Rankin in the first place.
Again: there are many more worthy people to be on the Families Commission. There was no need to go here at all.

do we accept McAuley's friends' and family's right to be upset and offended at Rankin's appointment?
Absolutely.
How Rankin or anyone else manages to blame Lefties for this debacle is beyond me.
Maybe she's wearing one of those special shields from God that protects her from her own hypocrisy and the wisdom she should have acquired in her oh-so-public life that would have told her not to take the job. maybe it's Paula Bennett's head they're really after.

Hey, if the Families Commission goes down with Rankin, that's a few mill for the cycleway.

This is a good point.
Why thank you, Mr Harris.
look no further than the timing. What's happening in the House at the moment? Why, Auckland is being restructured under urgency (plus the Residential Tenancy amendment got pushed quietly through, I'm told).
Yes, it is a useful diversion, I agree. But i still reckon she's made a v. powerful enemy somewhere, your mates wouldn't do that to you.
I sincerely hope Orklanders are brushing up on civil disobedience tactics.

Some games just aren't worth winning.
This one was never worth winning for her. Who benefits from her humiliation?

So no-one else thinks Ms Rankin's appointment was made in full awareness that the shite would hit the fan, then?
A really smart person offered a plum job like that, just might have turned it down. Was it only a few weeks ago that the Veitch saga ran? Did she really think the media wouldn't make a meal of it? Did whoever sanction her selection think it wouldn't pan out this way?
Doubt it. i reckon she's made an enemy or two.

Isn't the most pertinent question one of 'were those who recommended and appointed Ms Rankin aware of her recent circumstances?' And if they were, why did they continue to see her appointment as appropriate? Why favour Rankin when there are so many other worthy candidates? How could they possibly think this wouldn't blow up?

This is absolute rubbish. Some of the comments/rumours on the radio were absolutely untrue. This caused a lot of concern/worry for people listening.
Yeah, i very quickly stopped listening and phoned family in Napier for a better picture as some of them live on the hill.
As for the MM, they were out of control up there 20 years ago, bet it's worse now.

I don't buy that. Her appointment will only serve to alarm many who previously thought Key and co were benign centrists. That perception helped the Nats win power. So again, what benefit?
I agree. So many better options to choose from, so why her?
I keep wondering if Key is keeping his powder dry for whatever it is he thinks matters most, meanwhile letting Rodney and co have enough rope to hang themselves.
But what is it that matters most to Key?

Last night, TV3 late news devoted time to Tony Ryall's dress sense, particularly his predilection for colourful ties and mismatched shirts. To the point of interviewing some male fashionista about this worrying state of affairs - who got free advertising for his 3 shirts for $300 deal emblazoned on his shop window beside him.
What can this mean? Can we trust Ryall more, or less, because of his ties? Is he under stress and getting dressed in the dark?
