for the RWC mixing the customs clearing of cruise ships and parrrtry! probably wont be that big a deal - presumably the ships will be taking rugby fans around the country during the RWC - they only have to be cleared when they first arrive - after that they can be open - probably the real problem will be keeping the party on the docks .....

or if you're somewhere a bit colder remember the old maxim from Mr Z: "don't go where the huskies go, don't you eat that ..."

Wow! thanks - I have to read that again now

I like "pakeha" a lot - I'm happily pakeha - in the US I'd be a "honky" - not a nice word - it's great to have a word that's neutral that describes me

I'm going to vote "yes" - as I see it if the bastards don't lose we'll never hear the end of them

I'm not sure that the Dunedin Stadium's location for an indoor stadium means anything - it's not like you get a view (and it's not strictly 'indoor' it's actually open at the ends, it just has a roof - I doubt it will be heatable so don't throw out those Carisbrook winter woolies just yet).
Rumours around town have it that location has more to do with who'd bought up the land it's to be built on than any other reason. Parking in the area is the wirst in town, mostly because much of it's student flats, most without garages and with 3-4 people living in them - people are worried that Logan Park's going to be chewed up by people parking on it in winter

Ben - I think you'll find most of us in Dunedin who oppose the local stadium are not really against actually having a stadium (after all we already have one, did you see the game on Saturday? it was sold out, the new one will be a little smaller) - what we are against is PAYING so much for a second one - and having only 50,000 ratepayers pony up $200-400M for it - depending on overruns, 10% already in 2 months, and financing costs and whatever it's going to cost to reroute SH88
-
well think about it - it's supposedly costing $100M all up - will it make the money back in some form - and how do you measure it? maybe if it makes back that much GST? (which means it has to bring in a billion dollars) or in taxes (which means someone has to make $300m profit - again at least a billion dollars in turnover) - so it's unlikely the govt's going to get their money back - so you have to think of it more as a giveaway
Professional rugby is an entertainment business it should be treated the same way as any other

I left NZ for my OE in 1984, the day before Marylin Waring crossed the floor and voted with Labour against US nuclear warships, NZ was still reeling from the '81 tour and Muldoon was at the helm of the ship of state, 3 gins down and still yelling at journos.
3 weeks in Tonga/Samoa and then we washed up in the US, there was an election on and I got to vote for the last time in 20 years, just before they shut down the SF consulate to save money.
There was no internet, and to us NZ disappeared off of the face of the earth - except for some Reagan era saber rattling about ANZUS.
Coming back 3 years later, then 5 years later was like visiting another country, not the one I'd left, so much had changed so fast I felt quite adrift - we're so much more connected these days it probably couldn't happen like that again

what do you mean "we" - used to be "eh" meant "Aucklander" (or "Canadian")
