BTW I do like the idea of giving welding gear to all the people in jail, I'm sure they'll make good use of it .....
-
What I can't get over is that no one is asking "what can we do to make sure that fewer people end up in prison?"
-
Surely a lawyer asked to do something morally distasteful has the option to resign from the case? Or am I being hopelessly naive

Dinah - I love that walk between the terminals, especially after 12 hours across the Pacific - except for when the connection is running late (I've several nights recently in motels around the airport that have seen better days - AirNZ needs to get its act together - especially when they change flights and don't contact you)
That walk between the terminals was also where I saw the biggest rat ever

Rich: I've been to most of those too, some are decidedly sucky (JFK in particular - but most of the US airport issues have to do with immigration rather than the facilities) - but they don't do deals with banks to keep their competitor's ATMs out, nor are your connections a mile away with a bus that only goes every 20 minutes (I always walk, it's faster), or install 2 expensive talking toilets and a drinks machine in a space you're not allowed to leave when 4 normal non-talking ones could have been built for the same price, or, my fave peeve: you don't arrive in immigration in tears every time from being forced to walk through what appears to be the perfume counter downstairs at Macy's - I swear that new duty free thing is not just supremely tacky, its entrance is like sitting next to that little old lady on the bus who's lost her sense of smell, I have to hold my breath and run
Mostly though Auckland airport's problem is that travelers are not it's customers, it cares more about the stores it rents space to than us, we're only there on sufferance until we've been separated from our money

(but somehow rugby economics are different)

But in Auckland the airport is owned by a private company - which is why it has to be about the suckiest airport on the pla et - designed to keep people away from planes and to not get through customs
If NACT were really true to form this would only be done privately - rather than as a party for the boys

Honestly a wharf makes a sucky open space - once you've walked down and back once well that's it - it's better than a bit red fence - at least you get a view.
But really you want something more people scaled, you want to be able to touch the water, launch your canoe or yacht (or come ashore for a coffee before heading back) - but it's a deep water port so you can't very well go paddling - a wharf probably is OK for party central (so long as there are policemen with big nets somewhere) or cruise ships but it takes some imagination to knock it down and turn it into something more human (and please not a SF style "Fisherman's Wharf" tourist trap)

err "think big" - but "think bug" works too

(channeling Farrar's mob)
Actually I'm surprised that a National government, that bastion of private enterprise would engage in such a think bug orgy of public spending.
Here in Dunedin we have many small private establishments that already provide these services for free - we call them "bars"
