  • Hard News: About Occupy Wall Street, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

I have really gotten into Alternate History lately too. The ones you mentioned are great. I also really like The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. And the Eden trilogy by Harry Harrison (what a name!) made for good light reading.

  • Field Theory: The Cup Continues, in reply to BenWilson,

I so want to see ABs vs France in the final. That game can’t have a wrong outcome.

I told you we should have let Canada win thereby getting rid of France. We are now doomed.

  • Field Theory: Rugby World Cup stories, in reply to BenWilson,

I know it will never happen. But I would still find it sweet if it were to happen:) Still I don't see anyone saying that Spain didn't deserve to win the Football World Cup because they lost to Switzerland (iirc).

  • Field Theory: Rugby World Cup stories,

Am I right in thinking that if we let Canada win by 50+ points today , they will go through instead of France? This would be a nice way to avenge Cardiff 2007.

Then, of course, there’s the colossal immigrant population to pick from too.

Yes, I recall hearing (not sure if it's true though - really should check) that LA has the second largest Samoan population of any city (after Auckland obviously) - if so then you think this would make a prime recruiting ground for American rugby.

My fingers were crossed. I detest boring rugby

While it wasn't running rugby, I actually found it by far the most enjoyable match of the cup so far. The intensity made up for all other shortcomings. Just a pity Argentina couldn't have won.

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago,

Well that was a thoroughly engrossing game which while it was lacking tries I really enjoyed. Just wish the upset had happened. Would've really set the cup alight had Romania beat Scotland and Argentina England.

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago, in reply to George Darroch,

I'd still like to know what the odds are of Tonga or Manu Samoa winning are. I could of course look at the TAB, but a bookmaker's job is to work out the odds and then offer something different...

Well by looking at the TAB you can work out a maximum probability. If the TAB are offering 20:1 that obviously means that their bookmakers have worked out that they have a less than 20:1 chance.

I'm hoping the Argentina-England game tonight will be a good one. I'll be hoping for Argentina to provide the first upset of the cup - but certainly not expecting it.

    Catch a taxi?

Of course - you are right. Though there would be some critical mass when everyone realises driving/taking taxis is quicker that everything becomes grid-logged.
