  • Hard News: Reproduced Without Comment,

I expect you to toe the line as much as anyone else.

I'm currently picturing you as Andre the Giant off Princess Bride.

I tend to agree with the mechanics (if not necessarily the sentiment) of Ben's analysis: this is the best chance the Libs will ever have. It's now or never, and if they need to fight dirty to grasp it, then so be it.

Yes. But putting it to referendum is also their best chance of getting it through. The conservatives are never going to agree to vote for it in the house, but you might be able to get them to agree to have a referendum and then implement that referendum, which is basically what we had.

PR is merely a different method of electing your house of representatives, it is not a panacea change agent for people unhappy with the status quo - that properly is the job of those elected to the parliament.

I think it's good form to put any substantial changes to your voting system to the general population. If there's one thing we should have direct control over, it's how we elect the politicians.

Moving to a PR system is a fundamental change. It'll mean that every election will end up something like this with coalition governments having to be formed, it's a definite choice that a nation should make rather than pollies doing it themselves.

Herc/Xena is a great example. While the marvellous Ngila is the shining star of that show's alumni, the flow-on boost to industry skill levels in general was immeasurable.

Notably many of the stunt performers, who made up much of the LOTR crew.

    This is actually getting boring.

I've read it all and it does feel like it's going the same way as the Other NZ On Air Thread. I'm filing it under 'discussions that need to be had with this list of people not in the room'.

  • Hard News: Changing Times,

I agree, that's the way a rethink should go -- but I've looked at this, and when so much online content is created and published privately and for free, it's not entirely straightforward as to what you'd fund and how you'd do it.

Presumably a review could consider that too. There's still a need for videos, they just have to be made for both TV and online. There's still a need for singles or albums, they just don't necessarily have to get lots of radio play for it to be worth investing in their recording.

There could even be flow down effects. You didn't get the funding for the album, but we'll pay a third of the amount to get you in a studio and get a couple of songs out as seed funding. If they do well, we expect to see you back here in 6 months with a revised album proposal.

  • Hard News: Changing Times,

    Right.

A broader remit for getting nz music on 'any sort of air' - waves, TV, online etc, with an emphasis on a broad range of music tastes would seem to help that.

  • Hard News: Changing Times,

The obvious question to ask is: why is NZ on Air not funding music to be played on Radio NZ? Why is Radio NZ not one of the gatekeepers? Then when NZ on Air goes to it with a bunch of tunes, the music programmer can say, "dunno about that mainstream pop stuff, mate, but that hippoid reggae-folkrock-alt-jazz-feral-fusion really spins my wheels."

I thought NZ on Air was funding Radio NZ to the tune of a couple of million dollars. I know I've picked up a couple of NZ artists that I love from catching Music 101 while driving my car.

They also provide, or used to, a small amount of money to b net stations for a similar purpose. Does Kiwi get some as well?

Or the over 100,000 Iraqis and Afghans *they* killed (pro-rata)

I'm sure there's some things that you can pro-rata out, I doubt killing is. It's probably something serious enough that we should count it out in reality.

The BNP has been beset by internal conflict in recent months. In April, Mark Collett, the party's publicity director, was arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill the BNP leader, Nick Griffin, and its fundraiser, Jim Dowson.

WTF does a BNP fundraiser do? Stand on street corners and threaten little old ladies if they don't buy his fundraising sweets? Run headbanger karaoke nights with gold coin entry? Curious minds etc...

  • Hard News: Changing Times,

Why is there still a NZ on Air focus on commercial radio and TV? It's outdated.

To me that's the bit that needs to change. I don't buy all the slagging off of NZOA for helping fund mainstream pop, because it's our mainstream pop and as worthy of support as non-mainstream stuff. Perhaps spread a bit more widely, but mainstream pop are very strong cultural ties for many of us.

It's governed by legislation that needs to move forward a couple of decades. TV and radio should only be part of the equation. The money amounts seem very high when some parts of production have gotten cheaper. Things a sensible review and an amendment to the Act could do.

Woah. Hope his music career lasts a long time, limited other prospects apparently.
