@ Rachel, thanks for the info about the teacher's college - I think now it was probably you I heard it from in the first place - how circular!
I was at Helen Connon Hall just down the road when the Inaguahua earthquake struck - the second floor corridor doorways were decorated by shivering girls in their nighties. Then Betty Dowd swept down reassuringly in a much more voluminous version. I doubt those bricks would have survived the latest, but it's no longer there now, anyway.
Is this the tc building by the way - my memory is getting hazy?

Any information about the old Teacher's College buildings conversions near Cranmer Square? I saw a hint somewhere they had been affected.

Thanks so much for this thread. As I said on the RNZ facebook page, a BIG thank you to Vicky McKay on the all night shift. I turned on my radio as soon as I was woken by the quake (in Dunedin) and she was onto geonet and fielding texts straight away, so we found out what was going on before the newsbreak. And she exuded calmness and non-panic for the next hour and a half, by which stage I knew enough to go back to sleep for a while.
I've friends on Rockinghorse Road, but they were fine at 6 this morning. The Estuary is going to be a mess though.

I found the Sydney airport link bloody fantastic last time I used it. It was a truly novel experience to be in the center of the city 17 minutes after coming through customs, for the princely sum of $6.50.

Because I have zero fashion sense and have lived that part of my life vicariously through my daughters, I remember mostly the clothes they commandeered, from when I cut the sleeves off my wedding dress so they could wear it as a dressup.
I first really knew my oldest daughter had a talent in that direction when she was about seven and took one of our stripy katmandhu grey and red polyprop tshirts and wore it to school as a knit dress with red skivvy and tights. Soon after that I realised that it was a waste of money buying clothes for my kids that they had not chosen themselves and it was only a few years after that they had their own accounts and eftpos cards (but never credit cards, even to this day, to my great pride).
The clothes of mine they did choose were mostly seventies florals and paisleys which got hacked and shortened and turned into patches and inserts for flared jeans. Having gone through their handmedown and op shop apprenticeships they have turned into beautifully turned out young ladies with their own understated styles. It gives me such pleasure to look at them, I wish I could do it more often (sniff).

I thought Sean did much better than usual on climate change issues, and I think he was right to focus on the politics, because that's what it's all about. Still, I hope his repacement has a better environmental ear.

Re peonies
How far north? I believe they need cold, cold winters to really flourish. I know of growers in Otago and near Raetihi. But I hope you can grow them--they are more than beautiful--probably the most luxurious and sensual flower ever.
The Otago one is just up the road from us, and we did discover some beauties in our new garden last year. Cold obviously helped. No scent though, Geoff.
