  • Hard News: Democracy Night,

Apologies, it was One News that claimed that - John Campbell on 3 doing the same thing earlier.

  • Hard News: Democracy Night,

Gah, 3 News did it again in their news bulletin - "of those people who chose change, a third want FPP". Unbelievable.

  • Hard News: Democracy Night,

And just to get Mr Edgeler's back up - John Campbell just claimed that the alternative system percentages were "of those people who chose not to keep MMP". Then went on to complain that nobody understood it!

Oh and current leading alternative voting system? Blank/spoiled holding a firm lead over FPP :|

Whatever you think the merits of the complaint are (I'd say the general consensus around here is "invisible to the naked eye"), were the Police supposed to just tell Key to piss off? Really?

What a strange reading - I read that as a jab at Key for the intiating act of referring it, not the Police for then following up.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence,

Even putting aside all the media angles, it's amazing that a PM who has vigourously defended his need for significant DPS protection only recently sat through a highly public and well-telegraphed meeting with a secret black bag containing an active electronic device left centimetres away?!

Both Banks and Brash getting away with such minimal publicity about their involvement with Hujlich is revealing too.

Yeah this still astounds me - especially when Brash came out last week clamouring for the abolition of Kiwisaver itself.

  • Speaker: The Public Broadcasting Imperative,

Is it time to sell TVNZ and allow it pursue unencumbered the commercial path it has chosen?

Seeing an ad for Worst Plastic Surgery Shockers 7 pop up on TV2 last night directly triggered this thought for me. IMO the only reason we should be funding a "public broadcaster" that shows that sort of thing is if it commercially funded a great deal of more socially-worthy (and therefore worthwhile of social investment) programming - something that I don't see out of TVNZ anymore with the butchering of 7. Why on earth do we all retain ownership of TVNZ given what they've become?

  • Speaker: Doing the right thing on retirement, in reply to Sacha,

They've operated under an increasingly low tax environment post Rogernomics

Someone pointed out on Twitter that the top tax rate alongside Muldoon's non-means-tested super scheme was 66%. Funnily enough the 1984 government halved the tax but not the retirement package.

Intriguing (with the usual Twitter facts grain of salt etc etc).
And unfortunately just another example of how the "boomer" generation (many of whom are dear people I love BTW!) have dealt themselves into an absolute sweetspot - slash back their tax contribution to Government revenue but continue to spend Government funds like they haven't and mortgage the entire mess out a generation or two. Superannuation is the obvious face of that, but it goes a little wider and deeper.
