John Chambers and Son 1989.
And again in 2012, now the Xero building.
Doesn't it look smart now? Glad to see an older building rescued.

it’s our village square back; life here will immediately become easier, and more fun. The supermarket is one of those rare ones: human staffed by people you know, with windows to the outside giving a great view of the hills when waiting at the checkout, and they will get people’s requests in stock, no matter how arcane. I avoid supermarkets usually, but this one does it for me and a whole lot of my friends.
Totally agree about St Martins New World, it's a treasure! Although it's not my local just now, I will be going there.
And BTW Hebe, congratulations on your fancy new camera! I see you're already putting it to good use. :-)

Since this is a photo thread, here is this afternoon's storm arriving. :-)
It's a shelf cloud, I find. -
I was very angry when I read about NZ On Air funding a Wellington crew to make a film about the Chch earthquakes, and I've been reflecting on that anger. And the insider/outsider dynamic.
It's a tough one. There's a strong sense here that only Chch people understand what Chch people have been through. There's also a sense in East Chch that only Easterners understand how bad it's been in the East. And I'm sure in the worst-affected communities there's probably a feeling that no outsider can truly understand the experience.
All of these things are true, up to a point. There's a strong bond we have from shared emotional and life experiences. But I don't think that should blind us to our commonality with others. So many of us have survived horrific traumas of different sorts. No one but you can truly understand what you've been through, but perhaps the more we talk, the more we can appreciate that we're all damaged, all survivors, and that realisation can bring us all closer together.
I know everybody in any way associated with Chch and NZ will have feelings about the Canterbury earthquakes. And everybody has a right to express what they feel, as well as acknowledging other experiences.
As much as I love the feeling of community that's grown here in Chch, I'd rather our community wasn't an exclusive club. We've had such a lot of love and support from elsewhere.
This has been such a big experience, it can seem overwhelming, blotting out anything else. But it's not the whole world. Perhaps, letting other people in is part of letting go of these horrors.
Keep safe, and arohanui to you all.

Thought some of you bird-lovers would like this Don Binney quote:
In birdwatching, Binney says he discovered a passage into the landscape and the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with it.

That totally lives up to the hype
Those urns, though? Don’t stand nearby in a quake! /Chchparanoia
You should see the stained-glass windows, Jack.

That place is a definite national treasure
In Dunedin post-quake, I stared open-mouthed at all the twiddly bits on that facade! Amazing building.

the monument’s symbolism was thoroughly explained
Gosh. That's quite wonderful. If arguably laying it on a bit thick. :-)
And the Seddon monument. Hm. I'm sure sometimes a tall column is just a tall column!
