am i totally missing the joke / point?

I got this from it - strip clubs and opera both have a stigma attached to them and are both poorly attended by average New Zealanders (though both enjoy regular attendance from a niche audience).

But while strip clubs have a low-brow reputation, opera has a high-brow reputation and politicians will happily be seen patronising an opera, but will stay well away from a strip club (even if that's where they'd rather be).

    Somethin' like that.

Within walking distance this time, no less...

Hey, me too. A very convenient location. I'm also excited that it's just around the corner from Galbraith's.

I've just been checking out Clare O'Leary's blog. She seems like a really good addition to the panel. I think it'll balance things well and make for an interesting discussion.

Excuse me while I RSVP in lightning speed.

The line-up looks great, but I'm most excited about The L.E.D.s!!! They are officially my new favourite band, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them live.

It should be a good one.

  • Hard News: More Wikipedia Scanning,

Oh, good old Wikipedia. But the subverted version can be viewed in the Wikipedia history.

And the incident itself has been added to the Mint Chicks' Wikipedia entry, which is nice.

(I'm a little annoyed that I found out about it too late to change their discography to include "Pluck the Golden Lute".)

  • Hard News: More Wikipedia Scanning,

On the other side of Wikipedia mayhem, yesterday Ruban from the Mint Chicks commanded fans to rewrite their Wikipedia entry "with opinionated, objective, surreal crap".

    Chaos ensued:

Forming in petrie dishes, they began by playing lesbian punk house parties and low profile shows (for which they were paid with extended sessions of cunnilingus) before being discovered by acclaimed New Zealand independent record label Son Ova Nun Records.

The page now has a hilariously stern Wikipedia warning stating "the factual accuracy of this article is disputed."

  • Random Play: Diana of Wails: The…,

I found out about the death of Diana on the internet!

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, and I was hanging out in the #nz IRC channel, when someone announced that Diana had been in a car crash. I went to CNN.com to check that this was true, and they were reporting that she had a broken leg.

Back in the channel we discussed it for a bit, then someone said something that made me reload CNN.com, and it was true - she had died.

The Auckland mayoralty makes me want to cry.

So, I'm in Nelson on holiday at the moment, and the local morning paper is The Press. In the Saturday edition there was an article that basically said "Auckland's local body politics are screwing up the city, but let's not just laugh at them - let's learn from it so Christchurch doesn't go the same way."

    Oh, man!

  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

I spend about $220 getting my hair cut and coloured every couple of months. My hairdresser is awesome. She gets my hair.

I used get it cut cheaply and to do a DIY dye job, but I always ended up looking about five years older and like I should have four kids in tow.

But whether you pay $200 or $20, if you find a good hairdressser/barber stick with them.

but the bass & some of the guitar were really difficult to hear at times

Where I was sitting (front row of the bottom level, around the left-hand side of the stage), there were times where the bass, the low-end was really hard to hear. It seemed awash with treble.

    c) I will, however, be saving my pennies for Justin Timberlake. Will I be the oldest person in the crowd? Only time will tell.

I am wondering the same thing too, and I'm really looking forward to it. OMG!
