  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

we sold close of 5000 copies of See Me Go in a week on release in 81

heh heh ... one of my favourite songs in 7th form!

(In a previous life, I'm not that old, I'm young and hot)

Mainstreet was pretty full (1500 people..how many bands could do that now) with local bands every night in the early eighties

Well, not every night but you're point is generally correct and well made. I have to chuckle when I see 'big' 'underground' bands coming to Auckland to play the Kings Arms (300 pax?). cue wistfull memories of Jello Biafra singing 'Holiday In Cambodia' at Mainstreet

As for Helen Clark, well she probablly spoke too long and this would've added insult to Finn's injury. Hence his vent. Real Groove must be real happy with the publicity they got from regurgitating comments Finn made last year.

  • Hard News: Compromise,

(Monday morning and everyone's gettin' a bit of work in before posting?)

At the risk of offending the PA intelligensia; over at TradeMe we just used to say "This thread is dead" and that was usually pretty much it. This on-going long-winded discussion over "Theatre" is a little overblown, dontcha thunk?

NB - I haven't been on TM this year so who knows, maybe they're calling 'Theatre' over there too.

  • Stories: Injuries,

glad it all ended with a chuckle for your sister, Shaz ...

... a similar accident didn't work out so funny for Christopher Reeves. Yikes - horses scare the bejesus out of me.

    {apologies if I'm bringing the party down}

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

For 12 months, detailed business plan must be submitted, accounted up the wazoo. It's not really a handout.

heh heh. I did one of those in the late 80's at Sue Bradfords People Centre. I think her husband might have signed off on it. Sadly after 12 months my small business consultancy failed to make a profit ...

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

Why does anyone even try to make a living as a musician (or an artist, painter, writer etc. for that matter)? Masocihism, obsession, sheer bloody-mindedness or all of the above?
~ because it's not about trying to make a living

Ah, is that why they get a 'special' dole? One that means they don't actually have to look for work, unlike other unemployed?

all artists should be told that they can only produce great art when they are starving, miserable, and about to end it all. They have no right to expect otherwise. After accepting this, in writing, only then are they entitled to a small government grant every now and then.

I hear rumours that the Govt's new first-home buyers assistance packages will be 'trialled' with 'artists' first .... hmmm, I must re-aquaint myself with the tambourine ...

I worked with him on an advisory group that developed ideas for a potential network, and I endured a long and rather difficult phone conversation with him after he deemed me to be insufficiently committed to the vision.

Was this before you joined the Board of BFM, RB?

Paul Henry asked BT yesterday on Radio Live if it was okay to call him 'Brian'. BT said it was. The long-winded way Henry asked the question he was clearly taking the piss; which BT probably realised but -hey- that's the trade off for airtime, eh BT?

but I suspect that Neil Finn didn't mean his diss of the Prime Minister to come out quite like that.

Kind of you to say that. The prevailing opinion these days (esp amongst 'media' types) is that everyone should know that whatever they say will be reported and that someone like Finn should be more 'media-savvy'. Which is bollocks, because even here on PA ppl get theri comments misconstrued all the time. (No, I'm not talking about myself)

I thought this comment from RB's Crowded House link was funny:

Can't wait for Pitchfork Festival 2010 when a reunited Limp Bizkit plays three hours after a reunited Stone Roses, and Ian Brown has to cut the set short after being shot 27 times by Limp Bizkit fans.
