  • Hard News: The People's Choice,

this case smacks of detectives taking a look, deciding who the murderer was, and then building a case to convict him.

    S.O.P.

  • Speaker: This ain't a scene,

Emo is just commercial punk dressed-up in goth clothes

Close, but not quite. I definitely chuckled when I first saw Emo's because it was like stepping back into the 80's -- been there, worn that. Emo's look pretty harmelss to me, and how else is a closeted 15 year old boy meant to come to terms with his sexuality??

All I know is that in 2027, when people start throwing costume parties themed after this decade, three quarters of the guests will turn up as emos.

I chuckled again last summer watching a bunch of 20somethings crossing Ponsy Rd on their way to (presumably!) an 80's theme party. It was such a mish mash of styles I was tempted to stop and shout "No No No No - we didn't actually dress like that!"

I think what people get wrong is thinking that music videos from the 70s and 80s are time capsules of what we wore. Okay, some people did dress like they were in Def Leppard but we certainly didn't dress like Boy George.

What was 'wrong' with these 20somethings mentioned above was that they were mixing up the different styles on the same person ie dressed like Cyndi Lauper crossed with Flashdance crossed with Thriller. Eek!

"how many records have you sold?"

Good point. How many political parties has Russell Brown formed? That certainly renders most of his blogs moot then, doesn't it?

  • Cracker: LOL,

DC's criticism should be taken in the same spirit as that discussed in Graeme Reid's blog about Neil Finn's criticisms.

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

The worker, Jackie Lang, poured two cups of diet Coke during a break to comfort a distressed friend. This was against company policy

So, she didn't just "share her drink" with her 'distressed friend' (as was widely reported yesterday) she actually gave ger friend a free drink!

There's no doubt the employer completely over-reacted and probably doesn't know much about Employment Law (hence the clumsy attempt to label the action as theft by laying a theft charge). My guess is he/she has been wanting to get rid of this employee but couldn't because you can only fire after the employee has committed the same 'offence' THREE times - unless that 'offence' is theft, in which case you can dismiss instantly.

So if you crash the bosses car, erase the hard drive, and tell a customer to 'f#ck off' (NB: I'm making these examples up, not suggesting Ms Lang did any of them) you can't be fired until you crash your bosses car three times OR erase the hard drive three times OR three times you tell customers to 'f#ck off'.

AND THEN you can only be fired IF after you crashed the bosses car the first time you were instructed to drive more carefully next time AND IF after the second crash you were warned in writing that a third crash would possibly result in your dismissal.

AND EVEN IF YOU ARE FIRED for crashing your bosses car a third time you could probably still take a punt with Employment Tribunal. Odds are that they will find your boss should have sent you on a driving course, and probably contributed to the situation by allowing you to continue to drive the vehicle.

If you think I'm being silly then try one of the other examples. If you still think I'm silly then read this

The authority said Mr McNeill seemed "almost to see it as an imposition to be required to attend work if it did not suit him" and believed he had done nothing wrong. ... The worker had sought three months' lost earnings but was awarded only six weeks ... [$5,000]

FWIW - I stopped eating at Subway once they stopped giving out the little tickets to claim a free one after six/ten purchases.

And I must admit I got equally pissed off at the whole 'he lives in Australia, therefore he's not a real New Zealander' sneer.

Me too. I half heard the tail end of some news report from someone in Te Awamutu this morning on BFM about .... did anyone actually hear it? All I caught was some bad punning on Crowded House song titles. I tried looking for the story on the BFM website but all I could find was this kiddie porn (that bloke holding hands doesn't seem too happy)

I think he was, in an off-the-cuff way, saying something that we need to hear more. The press releases about our bands at SXSW or playing a big Waitangi Day gig in London, or having a track added a TripleJ or flying to some Sydney-side MTV bash with a bunch of hangers-on need to be put into perspective.

I've been saying exactly that for years, and been denounced bitterly as well. How much of the kiwi hype in UK media was produced by ex-pat kiwis? Weren't we flying them (and any other blaggers they round up) down here to attend special 'conferences' and 'showcases' in return for them telling 'our media' how kiwi music was on the cusp of global success?

Pieter Whatsername from NZ Fashion Week obviously learned something, as they similarly fly in ex-pats and 'influential' (as in 'not really') media to tell us how good our frocks are. Good on Karen Walker who's doing what needs to be done to crack it internationally but does anyone really believe Madonna walked into a NY store and said "I must have these jeans"??

Everyone in a band should read this blog and think about.

It's worth repeating, so I have. Graeme your blog is spot on, but unfortunately too big for a T Shirt print.

I don't see how your conclusions follow from the premises.

Which is why I've decided our nations future lies in me launching a coup detat. Unlike others here on PA I'm sick of having to explain myself with reasoned argument, so I'm just going to install myself as dictator and you'll all be better off just doing what I say. I have your best interest at heart.

But seriously: I agree that the instances of autocide are few and far between but I don't think that's the issue. And I don't think dissecting it into discussions about rural/non-rural youth (or ChCh youth) is helpful either. The change is happening slowly which is why it goes unnoticed (and why incidents like this shock us awake, briefly) but are we (society) not going to hell in a handbasket (albeit slowly)? A 100 years from now will we be living in a world like Mad Max III crossed with Escape From New York??

Hey, even I know that's sound ridiculous -- but I still kinda can't help wondering where this all leads. Who would have thought 21 years ago that Madonna's 'outrageous' wearing of underwear as outer wear would have led to today's bump-n-grind afterschool music vids? (Cue responses invoking "Elvis" "Teddy Boys" and "WTF?")

I shall now have a lie-down, before I get an attack of the vapours ...

I don't understand... the attitude to the Police from these young people

In the US there is a problem with a new "No Snitch" rule. For an overview click here

For The Daily Show's take on it click here

    ah, the ironies of youth

    ah, indeed.
