the view back to Auckland was not all bad.

    sea flowers

Sea tulips , I think. Despite their appearance, not plants at all but a type of sea squirt .

  • Up Front: Staying In, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I can't feel I'm being honest with myself if I don't use my own name. Even though it makes my partner cringe sometimes, when I express my opinions or describe my experiences.

An ex-partner of mine used to blog (actually still does) under his own name, and it used to really piss me off sometimes the things he shared about our relationship. Mostly not sexy things, but just relationship stuff he was sharing with the internet that he wasn't talking about with me. He seemed to think best when writing stuff down and saw no reason why he shouldn't write it down in public. So I would find out what was on his mind at the same time as any random person reading his blog. I found that deeply humiliating.

But if he'd been properly communicating with me I think I would have been quite OK with it.

Maybe this is a bit off topic. But I think we're still learning how to integrate RL with online life. It's complicated.

  • OnPoint: H4x0rs and You, in reply to James George,

James George, Marc C: If you're going to criticise journalists, can you give examples, preferably with links? This generalised trashing seems very rude to our hosts here (who are journalists) and also completely unproven. You would establish your point better by naming names and places and circumstances.

If your argument is that because of deadlines, journos can't possibly do a proper job, what would you suggest be done about it? Without deadlines, there would be no news coverage.

  • OnPoint: H4x0rs and You, in reply to William Ray,

Sorry don’t understand your objection, could you explain a bit further?

Keith’s original story was outing the security flaw at MSD and had nothing to do with this particular hacker as far as I can see.

Ah. So you're talking about Paul Craig, I thought you meant Ira Bailey. Who is, like Keith, emphatically NOT a hacker but has been described as such.

if those parties won’t front to explain themselves it’s hard to complain the story was maliciously biased against them

Keith's blog posts explained his side clearly and at some length. I would have thought a journo writing about the subject would have read them. 36,000 other people did, according to the stats.
