  • Cracker: Stoopid,

I did time on the call centre of an ISP who would regularly stuff up little things with invoicing, etc. Every month it was something new. So we'd get all these people calling about the problems.

If someone was nice and polite on the phone, it was a pleasure to deal with them and I would be much more sympathetic and more responsive.

I hated getting the angry callers who seemed to hold me personally responsible, as if I had a vendetta against them and had deliberately locked their account so they missed their netsex session with their Canadian fiance, uh, I mean "important online business meeting". Some of those cockers still haunt me to this day.

It might feel good to yell at the call centre person, but while it will upset them, that's where it stops. The call centre person doesn't in turn go and abuse her manager, who then abuses the CEO.

Politeness and good manners is like oil in a car. It makes things run much smoother and quicker.

Ok. So you get into a lift and find a cobra, a lion and John Banks. You only have two bullets in your gun what do you do?

I'd throw the gun away, and put on track two of The Lion and the Cobra and turn the lift into a disco, and hope that Sinead O'Connor's college radio hit "Mandinka" would get Banksie grooving.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

The number of people who will walk out onto the road before teh little green guy lights up is astounding.

I always* wait for the green man**. It's usually cos I'm lazy and I can't be bothered doing the mental calculation and possible running that going on a red man requires.

But I'm shocked to see the kinds of crazy crossing that some people do. Some even will stand on the road, waiting for the green man, then act surprised when a car comes hooning around the corner.

    * Don't tell anyone, but if there is no traffic, I might go on a red man.

** Or perhaps it's a green lady in jeans.

On transport we will have "the pony of Shanks"

If only! Auckland can be a rather pedestrian unfriendly city. Walking is pretty much my main mode of transport and yet everyday I find myself dodging cars on the footpath and cockers running red lights at high speed on Hobson Street.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

In Waitakere City Bob Harvey beat "JT" (as he's been styling himself) by a fairly comfortable 4500 votes.

An probably most of the people who voted for "JT" thought they were voting for Justin Timberlake to play at the Trusts Stadium.

    Standing still is right.

Another three years of treading water, or worse - running the city based on some 1960s ideals, where the automobile is king.

If John Banks is the answer, what the hell is Auckland's question?

Here's one question that fits: "How can I pay off the plasma TV and Fiji holiday I put on my credit card when the bastard evil council keeps raising rates?"

Right, Robyn, that's you and me at Coast Bar with a couple of rums and cokes or whatever. Bugger, bugger, bugger.

There are sorrows and they are demanding to be drowned. I think a Jim Beam and Coke is appropriate to match our new petrolhead mayor.

  • Shocking Security Cam Footage of Doug…,

I kind of like the idea of Doug Howlett standing atop a car, legs akimbo and mechanically rubbing his crotch, while going "Sssssss!" and "Hoooooooo!"

(I bet the reality was less impressive.)
