  • Hard News: Now It's On,

Gareth - Isn't that to be confirmed following Nomination Day (14/10/08)?

Right, I'm not big on process :>
I thought that National v Labour v Greens for Auckland Central would have already been decided though, if not officially confirmed? As far as I'm aware it's Nicki Kaye vs Judith Tizard vs whoever's-replacing-Nandor....
Just wondered if there was any kind of analysis/discussion on this level, or if it's all national party vote.

So to go back to old-school electioning, none of this party-vote-namby-pambyness, does anybody have a good link to info on the candidates for electorates? Auckland Central in particular

But they should do so in the full knowledge that Winston Peters and his party will have no role in any government they form

That strikes me as rather undemocratic. If they were to say that Winston Peters as an individual will have no role in their Cabinet, then fine, actually wish they would. But to write off an entire party with the backing of 5% of the nation ain't really right.
And it may encourage Ron Mark et al (as much I dislike them) to either turf Winnie (unlikely) or setup by themselves (I suppose unlikely as well given they wouldn't really get anywhere without him).

May end up being the same impact, but still...

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

Perhaps the problem is that, as a gay man, Craig sees Sarah Palin’s commitment to raising children and christianity as a threat to his lifestyle?

Oh I LOVE this kind of thing. Makes me laugh so hard. And I say that based on an estimation that you have a similar reaction to patently absurd smears Craig.

I remember hearing Parliament is going "full term" - so when is it due to finally rise? Presumedly it's about survival to that point - if that's only a couple of weeks away and the PM announces the election date at the same time as she sacks Peters, it would seem a little... churlish I suppose... to dissolve Parliament in advance?

Rik, I don't have anything like unbending faith in Helen Clark - but it seems you're part of the bunch that have unbending faith in anything that may possibly smear her?
I just don't think her involvement in this was of great significance

Their maps are like a GIS with 7 layers, all visible at once, with a resulting mess.

Ha, excellent - never thought I'd see GIS concepts as political analogy.

I'm not sure that they are going to come out of this with credibility which ever way they go! But that seems to be the most natural course...

  • Hard News: Need to Know,

Paul Henry pulled out a nice little news segway this morning suggesting Winston's last hope was that his "perfectly documented evidence" gets stucked into a black hole of LHC's making. Might be a douche but can be pretty funny at times...

I reckon Labour's best play on this now will be to turf Peters, give it a week or two to calm down, then use the whole affair to support the "urgent need for changes to electoral financing that we had to make" - highlighting Nationals trust use as part of it.
