I'm expecting twin boys in February.
Wow, congratulations, dude! Double the fun!

So do any other countries control fireworks quite as much as we do?
Interestingly, the UK bans fireworks being let off between 11pm and 7am, except on certain celebratory nights.
And it also looks like New Zealand is the only country outside of the UK where fireworks are let off on 5 November. Australian personal fireworks seem to be based around Queen's Birthday weekend.
We can look to other countries, but there are national factors to take into consideration, like weather (try lighting fireworks in Queensland!) and social and cultural aspects.

I live up the hill from Helen Clark, and every year the week around Guy Fawkes is filled with those darn kids and their fireworks. They go up Mt Eden and let them off, and the bangs echo around the valley.
I've seen some crazy shit over the years, including the guys from the local kebab shop who were standing out on the footpath letting off fireworks held in their hands, WTF.
But despite all the bangs, last night I caught a glimpse of Eden Valley and the suburbs of Auckland stretching out west, and there were all these pretty bursts of fireworks. It looked much more gentle than the giant bad-ass public park displays.

Once upon a time drunken munters seldom lasted past 1am down at the top 40 nightclub, now these pests hang around at clubs all night, fall over, getting in the way and generally disturbing the more refined psychoactive experiences of an aghast dedicated late night crew.
A few times a year I work on Sundays. And on my way to work, I always notice a few bars that are still going strong at 9am. But no one seems to be having a really good time. It's like they're in a zombie-like state, with the soul purpose of drinking and staggering around. It's so unappealling that it makes working on a Sunday seem fun in comparison.

Today's Herald has two interesting stories on the state of drug use, based on the results of a Massey University drug use survey.
It seems that the rate of cigarette smoking amongst young New Zealanders has increased. One theory is that the kids don't like the man telling them not to smoke, so they're sticking it to the man by lighting up.
And while booze, fags and party pills are popular, marijuana and P are on the decline.
However, the findings were based on a phone survey, which makes me wonder how many people would feel more confident admitting to legal rather than illegal drug use to a stranger on the phone.

The Labour-Flying Nun connection isn't new though. Last time the TV election advertising song was The Clean's 'Anything Could Happen'. Everybody just conveniently forgot that the song is actually about going to the doctor and trying to score drugs ...
That factoid tickles me nicely. The hallmark of a successful ad campaign seems to be the misuse of a song chosen because the chorus sort of sounds a bit like the message the ad is trying to get across.

I like that we're getting this much discussion on Sunday afternoon.
Which reminds me - PA System must have just reached its one-year anniversary by now (even though it seems like it's been around for much longer).

From the still really, really lame YouTube.co.nz
I just had a look at most of the front-page YouTube NZ clips, and was most taken by this two-minute effort from a young man in search of his soul mate:
Plot summary: he wakes up, showers, shaves, straightens his hair, and stares at the camera, mouthing "I love you", all the while his speaks in voice-over of his desire to find his soul mate.
I can't help but wonder if he's already found his soul mate right there in the bathroom mirror.

Meanwhile, from this blog post on the stoush, an amazing Indymedia link.
Truly. Barking. Mad.
In the first sentence of the blog post, the Illuminati is mentioned, which reminds me of this comment I saw over at the Herald's "Your Views" on the subject of the new trianglular Auckland City Council logo.
"Un illuminated" of "Whanganui" wrote:
I'm sure that Auckland's new logo is just another pyramid styled after the same pyramid logo that we see on the USA $1 bill. So no, it's not money well spent as the general population probably don't realise thats it just another neo-con con job. It's the sign of greed and fear.

Hmm, let's see: So all I need is a bowl, some shelving (MDF should do it...or was that MDMA?) and a tampon, and I'm good to go.
Ha! Once, a friend of mine took some coke and finally had the motivation/energy to erect some flatpack shelves that had been sitting around for months.
