  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

That Bruce Sterling presentation is one of the most fascinating reads I've had in years... years! I'll need years now to get my head around it.

If nothing more of this calibre of genius is parlayed through PAS for the rest of the year, I'll happily pay my sub... oh wait... you can't monetise a blog right?

  • Hard News: The Casino,

And my very limited experience has been that Auckland's casino is mindnumbingly depressing, while Sydney's was good-times-fun. That was probably down to my mental state in Sydney though. And that great faux-rock waterfall in the bar. Faux rock makes everything better.

Hmmm, as a resident of Sydney and a very infrequent visitor to Casinos, I'd rate Melbourne's over Sydney's. Melbourne's has columns that spew fire balls in some oddly choreographed pattern each and every hour... that trumps a faux rock waterfall to my eyes...

  • Hard News: High Noon,

    @Simon, cheers.

@Rob, it was the mention of Dimmer for me ... my entirely legal copies of the two albums (there's only two right) have kept me happy the last few hours... (everytime I hear "you want to believe your own scrapbook" I think of John Key, that's ok yeah?)

  • Hard News: High Noon,

Dunno if Spotify works in NZ (here in SEA it's only a premium service to date) but it has legs as a concept, assuming, and this is a big one for much of the world, that we all have high speed broadband

Premium only in Australia too. How's it work. The cute video's interesting but says nothing about how artists are remunerated? An end-user's agreement is avaible on the blog but I'm not going there...

  • Hard News: High Noon,

This has been a truly fascinating discussion, thanks to all. I'm still a little unclear about the need for the amendment and have perhaps missed the rebuttal of the official advice Russell noted earlier.

My biggest problem with it. If you want a law that is only applicable to hard-core pirates, then make a law that is only going to be applicable to hard-core pirates, not every single person in the country.

Rich has summed up my concerns with this simple statement.

Right then, the weekend beckons. Less erudite or important matters require my attention, starting with the Chiefs v Tahs. On behalf of the PAS community, I've offered to be one of the loud Kiwis pouring scorn on the convicts. Wish me well!

... and I'd like to also add my condolences to Bob's family. I too enjoyed his views and am sorry he's passed. PAS is a fantastic community and is diminished by his passing.

  • Hard News: High Noon,

I thought both protagonists were strong in their views but Chris was unecessarily rude and that didn't enhance his credbility.

Upholding the rights of artists, protecting a revenue stream, policing piracy, I get all this. What I still don't get is whether the issue is about the adequacy of the law or its enforcement (particularly since the the officials' advice Russell cited says the laws are adequate).

The protest seems to be about the fact that ISPs are being made to do something the courts can't currently do and without the usual protections (and I was surprised to hear a lawyer so quickly elide over issues of process). Perhaps I've misunderstood?

I remain of the view that part of the problem seems to be the reluctance of suppliers, though not necessarily creators, to re-examine how they take product to the market.

  • Field Theory: Massive Fraud,

But we should get something clear first; Panthers fans and rugby league fans in general will be throwing him flack and possible the occasional bottle because, and I speak in generic terms, they are munters.

I once spent two days and a night at the Panthers League Club. It was proximate to a shooty/war-gamey/ultimate game thing a friend insisted upon as part of his Stag do (which was fantastic fun and unbelievably expensive). I can confirm Hayden's analysis. Panthers fans are unbelievable munters. I had flash backs to my days as a junior at the Otahuhu Rugby Club in the '70s. Saturday evenings spent playing indoor bowls and some weird racing game with wooden horses. All good fun when you're 6, 10 and 12 even.

I don't recommend the Panthers club. I don't recommend Sydney west of Haberfield frankly. If you have to go there, do as the locals do; triple Bundy and Coke please.

  • Field Theory: That's Super,

It's somewhat disappointing to learn that they cut the Black Ferns programme, which costs about as much as the pay of one whole All Black. Not even a very good one.

Shows the priorities of the NZ Rugby Union these days: "Girls. Meh."

Well said Kyle. That's a crap decision. Just. Crap. A team doesn't win and remain dominant when they can't rely on financial support year-to-year. This is an incredibly shortsighted decision. One that the Minister for Sport and Rec ought to involve himself in.

    Paul
Actually, I did read that the other day. But surely you weren't trying to compete with copyright threads?!?

Not even the vain delusions I do have would make me that foolish.
