  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Ben Austin,

The use of urgency is pretty disgraceful. Has any party or person proposed any sort of policy that would tighten rules on this matter?

Apparently so. It’s being pushed by Grant Robertson and David Farrar, curiously enough.

    Melissa Lee explains herself:

I just had one of those “…you don’t know anything about anything!" moments.

  • Up Front: Fairy-Tale Autopsies,

Maybe she's like the Highlander. You know how Sean Connery's character already had a Spanish name on his home planet?

Spanish? He was Egyptian in Highlander, right?

I find it difficult enough to keep up with the web sites I enjoy, let alone..

I'm on twitter and I honestly don't understand how people do it. Granted, I don't have a smart phone. I think it's basically like an ongoing punctuated conference call, 24/7.

FWIW Danielle’s been using the “dimsie” handle for a long time. I seriously doubt it’s a reference to dimpost.

..& as for trolling or what-have-you, I think an offhand comment on a twitter feed oughtn’t be taken too seriously. I’ve said far worse things about my clients on facebook.

ETA: ah, whiplash post courtesy of Gio

ETA: I think I missed reading an entire page of responses before posting. SHAME

Can we go back to talking about ammonites & trilobites? I felt like I was actually learning something.

ETA: anagram generator! FTW! The internal PA one is called Alien Lizard, right?

  • Hard News: Like being there,

How is this different to watching a live concert on telly?

Umm… you couldn’t watch this show live on the telly?

I saw Duran Duran’s live streamed AmEx show (directed by David Lynch!) the other day. I’ve never loved Vodafone so much – it wasn’t that many years ago the internet connection I could afford wouldn’t have tolerated the bandwidth or the data volume.

No thanks, I won’t buy anything Apple-branded. Often way over-hyped for the actual feature set.

I totally thought they were overhyped until I tried one. Even after I became an Apple convert, I thought the iPad was a ridiculous concept, until I tried one. Granted, I’m not the person that queues for every new hardware launch, so perhaps I’m not so much the target of your critique – if my computer works, then I’ll use it until it doesn’t. My phone is the cheapest Nokia on the market.

Yes, there are still myriad problems and annoyances with Apple products, probably as many as non-Apple products, but there’s still something about them that draws you in. Design isn’t everything, but it sure counts for a lot when it’s aimed at usability, and paired with the kind of tech gains they’re constantly introducing, & an accessible unix-based OS. The jailbreaking thing’s a sticking point, but it seems to have created an entire industry in its own right, now it’s been declared legal (ref: Cydia).

(DISCLAIMER) Sent from my MacBook Air. This is the single most exquisite piece of technology that I’ve ever owned, ever (glad I waited for the second generation though).

I've never been a fan of blue cheese.

Speaking of ambition, Metiria Turei calls out the WWG for their lack of it.

    OH YES, this:

People in employment on low and middle incomes have as much to fear from the Welfare Working Group as beneficiaries as they will all be forced to compete for the McJobs these policies will create.

This is the point I’d like to see more in media soundbites. I reckon there are a lot of working National voters who’ll shrug their shoulders at WWG measures because they don’t believe any changes will affect them directly.

I'm surprised noone's shared this yet - David Cunliffe laying the smack down.

(Starts ~4 min in. Hat-tip Ben McNicoll; but I think he got it from The Standard)

  • Hard News: The Wall and the Paper, in reply to Russell Brown,

He’s found a target group that no one’s going to feel sorry for this week, but the journalistically worthless nature of the writing is quite intact. And this drivel is key content for the SST.

Fair cop. FWIW I stopped reading at his wholly inexplicable definitions of paedophilia vs pederasty. It is quite perplexing that they continue to publish the weird rants of a guy that quite plainly doesn't know what he's talking about.
