  • Hard News: Veitch,

most (every in my experience0 clinical depressives just *cant* care about anyone (including themselves) when wanting to stop the pain-

I know what you're saying, Islander. I've lost a friend to that black-holeness. But I think of depression as a spectrum, rather than an on-off switch. The spectrum does seem to have a point of no return on it, that is, the point at which it becomes almost impossible to stop being depressed or get outside that headspace. My relative had not - thankfully - reached that point.

Perhaps 'suicide attempt' is a just convenient carpet-bag term. If you prefer we can call his action a call for help that damn near killed him. He was almost gone when the ambulance arrived.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Giovanni - agree. Not intending to speculate on whether that's what the chap has done, just saying that the behaviour exists.

Islander - he was definitely depressed but not in the way that people who genuinely attempt suicide are. A question of degree perhaps. He certainly didn't have that scary-black-hole-suck of energy surrounding him. But his wife died and he almost completely lost the plot for quite some time. Could barely drag himself out of bed for 18 months. I'd challenge anyone to say that's not depression.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Giovanni, people do attempt suicide as a sort of PR stunt - although we don't generally describe it that way. We politely call it a cry for help or attention, which is what it is.

A close family member recently did exactly that, as an 'O pity meeeee' thing. Fortunately for everyone's sanity he managed by his actions to shock & embarrass himself into changing his attitude, but at the time it was something he felt he needed to do. Needless to say he wasn't thinking particularly rationally at the time.

From what I understand this is a relatively common way for people to get help when they need it desperately and have dug themselves into a deep mental hole about a situation.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

    Scott Y - agree.

And even if it is a PR stunt of sorts, it still shows the man isn't handling things rationally at the moment and needs space and help.

An attempt doesn't need an actual death wish attached to be a sign of having lost the ability to cope. I hope the Veitch family can leave the media alone and focus solely on helping the chap get through his spin-out.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

In breaking news, V. has been rescued again.

Far out, the guy needs to take a deep breath and slow down. Doing the right thing extends to oneself as well as to the people one has wronged.

  • Hard News: Doing anything Thursday?,

Excellent, thanks Islander. I've been looking for some new reading material and this looks ideal.

I grew up in the 1970s and '80s. Didn't spend much time over in Motueka but I don't recall ever having more than one Maori kid in my class at school and not even every year. When my older brother came to live with us in 1988-ish I particularly noticed how his would often be the only brown face on the street.

I moved to Wellington when I was 15 and I couldn't believe how many different faces and skins there were, and how they were absolutely everywhere. It was almost as if I'd moved to another country, and marvellously exciting. And completely different than Nelson.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

By "c***" I presume you mean "c**k", right?

    Why, no, Sacha. I don't.

Hahaha excellent. This is why I spend my precious procrastination time here. You guys rawk.

Hullo Islander. I thought you'd posted something on Oamaru a while ago and from that I'd gotten the idea you'd moved there - but I may well be imagining the whole thing.

I'm curious to know when your lot were around & who they were fighting - and why! Something that really stands out for me is how very very pakeha the place is and how little of the local history was available when I was growing up.

I suspect the wine etc. is one of the main reasons Nelson is so inward-looking. One doesn't need to look far for amusement when one is constantly 'happy'.
