  • Cracker: Being there is everything.…,

I've worked next to a few Millys (not that I know this one) and as bad as it sounds, she is just repeating (like bad seafood) what her trainer told her & she'll be consistantly pissing punters off.
I've been out of Air NZ for a few yrs now but I do recall some issues with the Auckland Baggage Systems (not Air NZ per se) of the type that plagued London Heathrow, so being a Christchurch lad I'll blame Auckland.
It sounds odd that they found your bag at Palmy but you didn't see it or they didn't give it to you. I wonder if it was a case of my shift ends in 10mins.
Bags can really get a seeing to as they're crammed on to a small flt or tags & straps get caught on other machinery - it falls into the shit happens zone.

As for Timaru, well I don't know the baggage system but just after the telegram was invented Airlines adopted Teletype. A wonderful sucsinct jargon rich immediate communication system, it was txt on paper. As easy as email and as illiterate as txt, we all had to learn the specific jargon and not make our own shit up. Eco firendly too, the paper was on a roll and you just ripped off the short msg saving paper. I wonder if this beautifully simple system has been scrapped.

  • Hard News: A plot point is reached,

"Our street is quite protective of trees "

That's what you need as the councillors all work on knee jerk reactions if they feel they're threatened/supported, a bit of rabble rousing (just remeber to look after yourself too).

  • Field Theory: Beer and Loathing,

    Cheers for that Sofie.
I'm just not that familiar with the brewing process, but I'll remeber it as Ale being tops down and Dark lager as bottoms up ;)

  • Field Theory: Beer and Loathing,

I'm still a little confused as to what constitutes a Dark Lager and what constitutes an Ale, but gotta love the Hereford Bitter on a winters night at the Dux de lux. The Ginger Tom on a sunny Sunday afternoon is cool too, it's kind of like the drunk you get without having a drink, hic'.

  • Field Theory: Beer and Loathing,

If I remeber correctly (& I might not) "Rattle-Snake Bar" (now the Bog Irish Bar) used to have a 'splash-guard' made of glass and it was as intimidating as a guillotine designed for mass circumcision.

The best toilets in a Christchurch bar had to be the ones in the Litchfield St Lounge bar (opp. the bus exchange) with pron pasted on the walls in some sort of ironic art, and it matched the manequins as bar stools etc. Quite the Bohemian type bar, and although aware of the irony at the time I appreciated the wall paper in its original concept.

  • Island Life: Still not over it,

I see greater cycle ways and better pedestrian access as a human right, as they work for greater wheelchair access and therefore greater democracy to public space and travel.

Recently a south island council removed the 17mile per hour speed limit for bicycles in their area. But that would make it a far safer place for all modes of transport in built up areas.

The reason wheelchair access is becoming more important is the increase in survival of spinal injuries since the late 1970s and our aging pop using their scooters, bicycles and even tricycles (great carrier space for shopping and the dog). Greater cycle access automatically includes those of us in wheelchairs and scooters from a greater reliance on the car and those b'stards blocking the wheelchair parking space.

  • Field Theory: Photo Finish,

Not all the shots were pervy, bum shots aside, some of the shots are of female athletes in competition. Beach Vollyball does need to allow variation to their uniform as any other field sport does.

Rhythmic Gymnastics was almost beyond belief in their physical abilities, syncro-swimming was odd but when I saw the finals I appreciated their strength and skill. I've done the egg-better in waterpolo but what these women were doing was brilliant.

TVNZ not even covering our third gold medalist, that is a bloody crime. Not having Sky if they cover the sports we're in rather than take the Chinese feed it just has to be better.
How bad can the camrea work get - anyone catch the waterpolo - why did they go so wide as to include the officials on the side of the pool rather than focus on the play in the pool. I was waiting for Georgia vs Russia as a repeat of the Hungary vs USSRwhen the pool was red with blood after USSR crushed the Velvet Revolution.

  • Southerly: The Joys of Unclehood,

Glorious, I was raised under a poster of Bobby Sands and a Mother who told me "Jesus was a Socialist", as a batton from the "Special Constables" of the waterfront strike stood in the corner of the room. My family are orange and green, red and blue, royalist and republican. Always 'considerate' in conversation to ask what the other thinks on a subject, but only as a means to establish the opposite view.

It is the right, no duty of every uncle to load a child up with sugar before dropping them back to their parents, so too buying noisy gifts with which to have a 1/2hr of fun and leave the child with endless hours of enjoyment at home.

  • Field Theory: The Home Straight,

Of frack, I held out some hope Toni was a bright spot in our reporting.
Isn't she expressing the same view as our 1500m Bronze medalist though? He wanked on about black men and cheats.
