Well, whatdya know. Another National Cabinet Minister has been revealed as a dirty liar. Murray McCully lied to Parliament about a potential law suit from the Al Khalaf Group which necessitated an $11.5m taxpayer-funded bribe.

RNZ has finally obtained information under the OIA which shows MFAT's "legal advice" which McCully repeated claimed, never existed. And if I'm not mistaken, Key and others also repeated the lie in public.

Somebody benefited from this National Party farce, and taxpayers lost $11.5m. Surely prosecutions are in order?

Have we ever had a more corrupt government in New Zealand? Not that I can remember.

A change of government is well overdue.

  • Hard News: Barclay and arrogance,

The discredited Dipton II is heading off to the UK, where nobody will recognise him. The Herald reports that he's "seeking employment opportunities".

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

RNZ is reporting that the State Services Commissioner informed Paula Bennett about Winnie's "mistake" under the no surprises policy. And the deputy PM didn't bother to mention it to Bill? Go on... pull the other one.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Sacha,

I guess that leaves Eagleson (who was in charge of the #dirtypolitics apparatus before the last election so the PM was kept at arms length)?

"We would have told Bill, but he was busy texting Glynys at the time."

The timing of the leak is important, with English about to head off on a tour of Winnie's Northland electorate. If in some distant and obscure alternative reality Blinglish was truly kept in the dark by the rest of his colleagues, that tells you all you need to know about the way Eagleson and the rest of the cabinet treat dozy old Bill.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to Katharine Moody,

This poll which claims to include both landline and mobile has the Greens at 9% which is a whole lot different than 4%.

Where are those headlines proclaiming, "Greens more than double their vote"?

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to tussock,

So, Bill English gets a government subsidy to rent his own fucking house, and we slap a coat of paint on that law to make it go away and now he's Prime Minister without anyone even getting to vote on it.

If I recall correctly, English had been claiming the subsidy for years, but only had to pay back the amount he'd claimed during the previous 2 or 3 years. So a nett gain of tens of thousands of dollars for Mr. double Dipton.

Metiria has resigned for not telling WINZ the full story when she was in her early 20s. Meanwhile a prominent National MP has been accused of telling much bigger lies to WINZ, including not declaring she was living with a partner for years while claiming a benefit. It's a pity that scores of legal letters seem to have silenced the media in that case.

    The hypocrisy is palpable.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to Moz,

They were only right if they knew then what we might learn tomorrow about why exactly she resigned.

I don't think anything else will come out. Someone had contacted John Campbell today to say that Metiria's child's grandparents had provided support. She confirmed on Checkpoint that there was no direct financial support... just things like babysitting or looking after the child when Meti had exams. Just the typical things most grandparents do, in other words.

I hope she stays in parliament

Too late. Metiria has just told John Campbell that she's taking her name off the list and resigning from Parliament.

A very good person gone. For all the wrong reasons. Bugger!

Espiner once again won't let people finish a sentence - in his myopic quest for one word answers - or just the answer he wants., irrespective.
He is getting past his use-by-date.
    Fast becoming a Hosking-light.

    +1

Espiner demanding a simplistic yes/no answer from Shaw while continually talking over him was just plain rude. Now RNZ is running "Shaw refuses to give answer on benefit fraud" as their top news headline this morning.

RNZ can and should be better than this.
