  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

I still wait for one of his followers to create a

"Leave Winston alone" clip on youtube.

With lots of baubles in the background.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

The TVNZ news last night on this was just pathetic - it was Olympics are fun! ... oh, and there's a war somewhere...

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

I know a lot of people who have used the DPB over the years, men and women, and as far as I can see they usually do so very responsibly, and are very keen to get back to work when they can. the idea that there are thousands of people out there having babies as a career move just doesn't match up to what I've seen.

    great dog-whistle stuff though.

The abatement rates are self-defeating, and should be higher than $100 I believe, I'd think more like $200 in today's economy.

  • Field Theory: Out of the Blocks,

I think they should all be made to compete in the nude, just as in the Classical Olympics - and i'd watch then ;-)

  • Hard News: All your Trade are belong to us,

Jane Clifton still is worth the read. But I don't think I'll be renewing my sub when it runs out.

But the main issue Russell raises here points to that strange way that I think most of us view our online lives.

Because we tend to go online in the privacy of our own homes, or offices, we automatically think that what we do online is somehow private, when it so often is not. We create this illusion, understandably, that as we need to use various passwords etc to get into places, what we are doing is somehow secure.

I don't konw if this very human response will ever change, but it is defintiely woirth bearing in mind .

  • Hard News: Te Reo and the Resolution,

    culturally alienated...

I'm not sure if that term works. It seems to implie some essentialist understanding of ethnicity. You are born of Maori parents therefore you MUST be part of Maori culture in all that you do and in love with all of it, always - if not, you're alienated.

What about those for whom their putative birth culture just doesn't interest them that much? Are the alienated? Or just making a decision?

I am just a little wary of this sort of essentialist approach.

  • Island Life: Who Was That Masked Bag Man?,

He's like an oil slick on the water - superficially pretty, shiny, attractive, but then you realise he's smothiering all life below and when you try and pin him down he just slips through your fingers...

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

At 8 pages... I dozed off - and there was nothing that exciting but it did seem a huge free promo to me. But according to the mouth-breathers over at kiwiblog the Herald is a sink of Maori Marxist-Feminists out to destroy red-blooded Nu Zild culture. But I guess they will all just say John Key is really the ultimate Manchurian Candidate now.
