  • Hard News: The humanity,

But spare a thought for the journalists.

Sadly, with a few notable exceptions (Patrick Gower is not one of them), my dominant thought for journalists is less than charitable.

I'm certain most journalists enter the profession with dreams of being a source of knowledge and information for the public. But somehow the industry seems to promote the Gowers and his ilk. Journalists and editors combine to distort data into "news" or at least what they define as news, which seems to be whatever will get the most advertising revenue.

As far as I can tell the system is broken. Nobody benefits. Not the journalists who still want to be the conduit for information. Not the public who see a distorted view. Not the subjects of the journalists examination.

Yet some journalists do figure out how to be that conduit and maintain integrity. The problem seems to be giving those journalists an outlet that also provides for their family.

  • Speaker: Three times over, and never again,

Thank you. That was hard to read but must have been much harder to live.

    You have my deepest sympathy.

But you made me angry as well, angry at every single lawyer in New Zealand.

Our legal profession have a lot to answer for, they are so self righteous and arrogant about their system. That system is amoral. It is utterly broken, yet getting a lawyer to admit that their precious legal system is not perfect is as likely as getting a rape conviction. A pox on their houses.

  • Hard News: Five further thoughts, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

    Ignorance

In its purest form simply a lack of knowledge of just what National planned to do.

And the fault of that was a campaign from Labour and The Greens that failed utterly to communicate that to the voting public in any way that caused the voters to get out and vote (for Labour or The greens).

Voting positively and loving NZ was all very well but it failed to explain to anyone why not voting was a bad thing. Meanwhile National voters got out and voted.

Both Labour and Green campaign managers should be getting a please explain letter followed by a very nice reference for their next employment opportunity.

  • Hard News: Five further thoughts, in reply to Greg Dawson,

I am thrilled to see the inevitable calls for Labour to throw the gays, the women, and the children under the bus in order to compete with National.

God I hope this is just a failure of tone and a lack of sarcasm tags.

It is worth remembering that in every survey done in the last ten years the centre voters have all support gay rights, womens rights and ending child poverty.

Moving towards the centre means embracing all those things not throwing them under a bus.

  • Hard News: Five further thoughts, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

I honestly can’t see any good reason to have published polls like that during the election.

Only gain is for the media that can spend several pages/minutes discussing the poll instead of policy.

    Agree with 1-4.
    But not 5.

5 is the one I'm least sure about, tbh.

I really don't know about 5 either. Annecdotally I think it's a bad idea, but Labour is going to have to do some serious research to figure it out.

It’s also hard not to hold Cunliffe responsible for the fact that Labour’s gone through so many leaders in that time period.

+1 He has been the destabilising force under previous leaders.

In 2011 National got 1,058,636 votes, or 33.7% of the available vote. In 2014 it got 1,010,464 votes, or 31.2% of the the available vote.

And yet again our media appear to be mathematically challenged.

That's the generous interpretation - that they are so stupid or lazy they can't add.

Either that or they are part of the corruption that Hager revealed to us all.

    hmmm I guess I'm a bit grumpy.
